PRESBYTERY OF ANNAN p. 612

Proposed to be erected by the General Assembly 1581. It only appears, however, as that of Middlebie in 1638, which was dissolved by the Gen. Assembly 21st May 1743, and that of Annan, erected out of a portion of it, with the addition of Cummertrees and Ruthwell, from the Presbytery of Lochmaben. The Register begins 12th April 1699, and is contained in seven volumes. The second was left in possession of the Presb. of Langholm by special agreement. There are chasms in those of Middlebie from 1st Nov. 1721 to 26th June 1723, and in those of Annan from 5th May 1762, to 18th Nov. 1778, and the attestation of the Synod, 19th April 1803, states that from 6th Oct. 1784 to 21st Oct. 1800, there are many sederunts in different months, amounting to about seven years, totally wanting, and six  months sederunts at different months recorded in part only: (This latter part was made up from scattered minutes, &c., by the zeal and diligence of the Rev. Dr. Duncan, Ruthwell.)
