PRESBYTERY OF DUMFRIES p. 610
1837. GEORGE MACKNIGHT BURNSIDE, son of the Rev. Cunningham B., Dunscore, studied divinity at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. 2d July 1822, and ord. by them 1st July 1823, as assistant to the Rev. Geo. Heron, Terregles, officiating at same time on the Sabbath evenings in the New Church, Dumfries; pres. by William IV. 28th Dec. 1835, adm. 20th July 1837, delay having been occasioned by parties opposing the call. He died 29th Jan. 1855, in 58th age, and 32nd min. He bad an original genius, and took views which minds of a different cast did not readily comprehend, and being of a poetical turn of mind, his language was often poetry itself; he preached as one who had experienced the truth, and was living under its power.
