The
bard, however, paid keenly for his sport, as Dr M. wrote a severe epigram, which
the poet felt very sensitively, being, perhaps, the only satire written upon
him except the poetical epistle from a tailor. Dr M. marr. 21st Aug. 1777
Jean Loudon, who died 17th March 1826, and had two sons, William Porter M.

(Cunningham's) Works iii.] 1806. ALEXANDER MURRAY, son of Robert M. shepherd at
Dunkitterick, born at Corwar 22d and bapt. 27th Oct. 1775. He made the most
astonishing efforts in acquiring learning, which brought him under the notice
of many respectable gentlemen. By one of these, the Rev. J. G. Maitland of
Monigaff, his native parish, he was introduced to Principal Baird of
Edinburgh. Having undergone an examination by Principal B., Drs Finlayson and
Moodie, they were so satisfied that they enabled him to get a gratuitous
education at the Univ. of Edin., of which he subsequently became so
distinguished an ornament. Obtaining a bursary from the city, he was enabled
to maintain himself by private teaching, and having finished his course, was
licen. by the Presb. there 14th April 1802,
appointed by Geo. III. in July, and ord. (assist.
and suc.) 11th Dec. 1806, he was adm. Professor of Oriental Languages in the
said Univ. (after a very severe canvass), 27th Aug., and had D.D. conferred
17th July 1812. He died 15th April 1813, in his 38th year and 7th min. He
marr. 9th Dec. 1808 Henrietta Copland Affleck, to whom his Majesty granted a
pension of £50 yearly; she died 27th April 1824, and had a son James Affleck,

JOHN MACWHIR, prom. from Dunfermline Chapel of Ease, pres. by Geo. III. 17th Nov. 1812, and adm. 7th Oct. thereafter; he got the church rebuilt in 1814, and died 8th Feb, 1835, in 26th min., having proved himself a zealous labourer in the Lords vineyard, and worn out an iron constitution in his Master's service. He marr. 10th Dec. 1813, Jean, daugh. of Mr Alex. Fraser, Solicitor Supreme Courts, Edinburgh, and had a son and three daugh., of whom Alison marr. the Rev. Tho. D. Nicholson, min. of the Scotch church, Nelson, New Zealand, and Amelia, Mr James Mure, writer, Edinburgh-Publications-A Doctrinal Catechism, 1815, 12mo; A Catechism, with references to Scripture instead of answers, 1823; Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iv.)-[Presb., and Syn.
