1585. DAVID FORSYTH translated from Bolton, continued in 1591, and was trans. to St Boswells about 1592. -[Reg. Assig.]

 

1593. ALEXANDER GAITTIS, A.M., son of Mr Patrick G., min. of Dunse, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 12th Aug. 1591, was a member of the Assembly 1602, and died 6th Nov. 1603, aged about 32.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., and Assig., Booke of the Kirk, Test Reg.]

 

1604. ALEXANDER CASS, or CASE, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th July 1600, was a member of the Gen. Assembly in 1638, and being first in the roll, gave his vote with some pleasant or witty remark on the grave and solemn questions which occupied their deliberations, for which he was thus lampooned at the time:

 

From the must stupid senseles asse,

That ever brayed, my cousin

Casse; He is the Assembly's voyce,

and so The Assembly is his echo.

The fool speaks first, and all the rest

To say the came are ready prest."

 

He was also a member of the Commission of Assembly 1644, 1646, and died after 28th July 1651, in his 74th year, and 47th min. He marr., 14th April 1607, Helen Hume in the par. of North Berwick, and had a daugh., Agnes, gudwyfe of the Rig.-[Reg.  Laur. Univ. Edin., and Assig., St. Andrew's Syn., N. Berwick Sess., and Test. Reg., Tombst., Acts of Ąss., Baillie's Letters, Stevenson's Hist., Peterkin's Records.]

 

1652. DAVID ROBERTSON, A.M., trans. from Dunbar, adm. before 18th June; conforming to Episcopacy, he was coll. 16th Oct. 1662; trans. to Lennel between 25th Aug. and 29th Dec. 1663.-[Presb., Syn. (Kelso Presb.)  and Test. Reg. (Laud.), Reg. Collat., Tombst.]

 

1664. GEORGE HOLIWELL, A.M., trans. from Hilton, pres. by Sir Patrick Home of Polwarth in March, and adm. and inst. l0th May; died 24th Aug. 1704, in 67th age (this age given on his tombstone, however, is probably a mistake). He marr Margaret daugh of Mr Robert Hume, min. of Greenlaw, and had issue.-[Presb., and Test. Reg. (Laud.), Tombst., MAS: Acc. of Min. 1689, Rule's Sec. Vindication.]

 

1709. ARCHIBALD BORTHUIK, A.M., trans. from Greenlaw, called 5th April, and adm. 25th Aug; died in March 1727, aged about 88, in 34th min. He married, and had a son Patrick; merchant, Leith; 2dly, 17th Jan. 1701, Catherine, daugh. of James Lawson of Cairnsmuir, and had two daugh- Barbara, who marr. Patrick Hepburne, writer, Edinburgh, and Katharine.[Presb., and Edin. Reg (Marr.), Douglas's Peer. ii.]

 

1727. JOHN HUME of Abbey licen by the Presb. of Chirnside 27th Oct. 1724, pres. by Alexander, Earl of Marchmont in July, and ord. 29th August 1727; trans. to Greenlaw in 1734.-[Presb. Reg.]

 

1735. WILLIAM HOME, son of Walter H. of Bassendean, bapt. 26th Nov. 1710, licen. by . the Presb. of Earlston 6th Nov. 1733, ord. 7th Jan. 1735; having attended the theatre in Edinburgh, with others, 14th Dec. 1756, the Presb. there made a complaint to the Presb of Dunse, on which he expressed his sorrow, and was rebuked; but the Presb. wrote a spirited reply to the complainers 22d March 1757. (See Scots Mag. xix.) Mr. H. was trans. to Fogo in 1758.-[Presb., and Westruther Sess. Reg., Carlyle's Autob., Scots Mag. xix., Morren's Ann. ii.]
