Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Bishop of Galloway, and was held in conjunction with Dumfries from 1574 to 1608; it was supplied by CHARLES HOME, exhorter from Beltyn 1568 to 1570, JOHN HALYDAY, reader Nov. 1570, JOHN GLEDSTANIS 1574, JOHN ANDERSOUN 1576, (a pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. to ADAM MURRAY was issued 4th Oct. 1577, but his acceptance does not appear), JAMES MAXWELL 1578, and HARBERT ANDERSOUN from 1579 to 1585.

This latter date seems confirmed by that of his degree (taken after passing through the curriculum of study) at the Univ. of Glasgow, as in this case he would have been then twenty-seven, which is more likely than that he was thirty-five; called between 21st Dec. 1652 and 26th April 1653, ord. 7th June succeeding; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st; Oct. 1662, when he retired to the par. of Glencairn, and abode with his family at successive places of residence, officiating occasionally
