TERREGLES.

The church previous to the Reformation belonged to the Collegiate church of Lincluden. The parish was supplied by WILLIAM THOMSON, reader, from Beltyn 1567 to 1591.

 

1627. THOMAS MELUILL, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1607; in 1627 there were “about twa hundreth communicantis, and na schule, nor na provisionne for ane, but greit neid." The min. had for “stipend iiijc iiijxx merkis at the maist, and ewill payit." Mr M. died 31st May 1659, aged about 72. He marr. Janet Duncan, who died in June 1653, and had issue.-[Act. Rect. Univ. 1660. ROBERT PATON, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1648, called -,and adm. 17th July 1660; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. For hearing him expound a text of Scripture in a private house, Gordon of Earlston was ordered to be banished in 1664, and three years after, Mr P. was ordered with others, to be prosecuted by the Lord Advocate, for being engaged in the rising at Pentland, but they had an act of indemnity 1st Oct. 1667.-[Mun. 1678. ALEXANDER GUTHRIE, A.M., studied at St. Salvator's College, and took his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews 25th July 1668, passed trials before the Presb. of Forfar, and got a testimonial 7th April 16 7 5 for license, continued in June 1680, and was trans. to Keir prior to 11th Sept. 1681.-[Act. 1684. JOHN ANDERSON, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1673, entered on trials before the Presb. of Perth 27th March 1678; deposed for immorality.-[Edin. Grad., Test. Reg. (Dumf), Apology for the Clergy.]

 

1688. JOHN KINCAID, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1659, outed by the rabble at the Revolution, and deprived by the Act of Parliament 1690, restoring the Presbyterian ministers.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Test. Reg. (Dumf.), MS. Acc. of Min. 1689.]

 

1690. ROBERT PATON, A.M., above-mentioned, restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April; trans. to Barnwell 26th Aug. following.-[Presb. Reg.]

 

1702. DAVID WIGHTMAN, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh, 17th May 1699, called in June and ord. 23d Sept. 1702; having been called to Applegarth, he demitted in March 1706.-[Edin. Grad., Presb. Reg.]

 

1707. THOMAS MACK, studied theology at the Univ. of Glasgow, where he had a bursary 11th Oct. 1698, licen. by the Presb. of Hamilton 27th Jan. 1702, called 4th Feb., and Ord. 1st May 1707; died 6th May 1750, in his 76th year and 44th min.
