1727. GEORGE DUNCAN, son of Alex. D., merchant, Aberdeen, called 22d Feb., and ord. 23d April; drowned while bathing in the Loch 17th July 1765, in his 73d year, and 38th min. He bequeathed a small sum for supporting a school in a distant part of the parish; he was an active, faithful, and able minister, and of a pious and cheerful temper. He marr. Ann Hair, widow of Robert Boyd, writer, Dumfries; she died 2d Dec. 1741, aged 45, and had three sons and two daughters-(Duncan's MS. Geneal., Presb., and Syn. 1766. GEORGE DUNCAN, son of the preceding, licen. by the Presb. 2d Aug. 1763, Ares. by Geo. III. 11th Sept. 1765, and ord. 24th April following; elected Synod-Clerk 21st Oct. 1783, and died 17th March 1807, in 69th age, and 41St min. He was buried in the same grave as his father, to whom he was not more closely allied by kindred and profession, than by the christian virtues and graces. He marr., 4th June 1770, Anne, daugh. of Mr Will. M'Murdo, a brewer and magistrate of Dumfries; she died 20th July 1824, and had five sons and three daugh., of whom two were in the ministry, viz., Henry, min. of Ruthwell, and Thomas Tudor of Dumfries; George, William, and Robert became merchants in Liverpool, Mary marr. the next incombent, and Christian marr. 1807. THOMAS INGLIS, trans. from Dunscore, pres. by Will., Duke of Queensberry in April and adm. 9th July; had D.D. from the Univ. of Glasgow l0th Jan. 1845, and died 4th Aug. 1860, in his 84th, and 54th min. He marr. 1st 20th Sept. 1808, Janet daugh. of Robert Henderson, Esq. of Cleuch-heads, and had a daugh. Janet Carruthers; 2dly, 25th Feb. 1828, Mary, daugh. of his predecessor, and had a daugh. NEWABBEY. The church previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey thereof. The parish was supplied by PATRICK C0LVLL, reader, front 1567 till his death in 1570; and JOHN LOGANE from Beltyn 1570 to 1585.
1628. ADAM SYMSOUNE was a student of the Univ. of Glasgow in 1619. A mob of women arose against him " and the schoolemaister," and shamefully abused his wife and servants, pursuing them with rungs, and pelting them with stones, which outrage was brought before the Privy Council 27th March 1628, who remitted the same to Sir William Greir of Larg and Sir John Charters of Arnisfield or either of them that they may deal as accords.-[Mun. 1636. DAVID RAMSAY, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of St Andrews in 1623, he gave x. li. towards building the library of the Univ. of Glasgow 25th May 1636, and had his stipend augmented by the titular to viijc merks, with xx. merks additional for communion elements, 18th July thereafter.
