1715. daniel sinclair, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 2nd April 1705 licen. by the Presb. of Caithness 30th May 1711, pres. by Sir Robert Sinclair of Longformacus in Dec. 1714, ord. 5th May following; died 25th Nov. 1734, aged about 48, in 20th min. His books were estimat at xlv li. He marr. in Feb. 1729 Elizabeth, daugh. of Robert Hamilton of Airdrie.—[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb., Sess., and Feet. Reg. (Laud.), Tombst.]

 

1735. robert monteith, A.M., son of Mr James M., min. of Borgue, attained his degreeat the Univ. of Glasgow 29th April 1726, licen. by the Presb. of Kirkcudbright 7th July1731, called 31st March, and ord. 12th June 1735; died 11th Dec. 1776, in his 68th year and 42d min. His bravery as a volunteer has been sarcastically described in the witty ballad of Tranent-muir:—

 

" Monteith the great, when hersell shit,

Un'wares did ding him o'er, man,

Yet wadna stand to bear a hand,

But aff fou fast did scour, man."

1777. selby ord, min. of a Presbyterian congregation at Cockermouth, pres. by Thomas Rait, Esq. of Longformacus—, and adm. 25th July; died 10th July 1814, in 73d age, and 48th min. He was esteemed on account of his learning and piety, and the parish being distant from medical aid, was highly useful in relieving distress. During the months of Feb. and March 1801, he inoculated for the smallpox no fewer than one hundred and seventy-four persons, from one month old to the age of twenty-three years, without a fatal case. He marr., and had a son, Edward, who joined the army, and a daugh., who marr. Mr Dods, farmer, Stonypath. —Publication—Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. i.).—[Presb., and Sess. 1815. george bell, a native of Cummertrees, became schoolmaster of Kirkmahoe, and was afterwards tutor in the family of Dr James Home, of Cowdenknows, licen. by the Presb. of Lander 23d Sept. 1813, pres. by John Home Home, of Longformacus in Feb., and ord. 11th Feb. 1815; died 8th Feb. 1830, in his 42d year, and 15th min. Though not highly popular as a preacher, yet his kind and generous endeavours were never wanting to promote the pros­perity and comfort of his parishioners. He marr., 22d June 1818, Elizabeth Easton, relict of Mr Watson, and had issue.—[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1830. henry scott riddell, originally bred to the law, entered as a writer to the signet in 1810, and conducted the Marchmont Case in London before the House of Peers, licen. by the Presb. of Selkirk 7th July 1829, pres. by John Home Home, Esq. of Longformacus in June, and ord. 6th Sept. 1830; trans, to Dunse 6th, and adm, (assist, and sue.) 19th Oct. 1843; died 15th April 1862, in his 73d year, and 32dmin. He marr. 1st, in 1818 Agnes, daugh. of Archibald Gilchrist, Esq., merchant, Edinburgh, she died 22d Feb. 1824, and had a son Henry, barrister in London; 2dly, Elizabeth, daugh. of------Horne, Esq., and had three sons and daugh.
