PRESBYTERY OF DUMFRIES p. 588
from what cause is not known, probably before 14th March 1673, was executor qua creditor to the succeeding incumbent in 1678, took the Test 4th Oct. 1684, "was sett at libertie" 24th of said month, and died 29th Sept. 1693, aged 69. He used to take large sums from his parishioners promising not to discover them to the troopers; notwithstanding this he betrayed them, and obtained the fines imposed on their wives and families; and so miserly was he that he embezzled the poor's money, sold his library, and even the pulpit Bible. 16-. WALTER MAIR, A.M., brother of Mr James M., min. of Troquire, had his degree from the Univ. and King's College, Aberdeen, 19th July 1666; died in 1678, aged about 32. The insicht, &c., was estimait at xl li. Isobel Ross, widow.-[Fasti Aberd., Test. Reg. (Dumf.)]

1682. JAMES HUME, A.M., trans. from Torthorwald, outed by the rabble at the Revolution, and deprived by the Act of Parliament restoring the Presbyterian ministers; he died 13th Feb. 1701, aged about 59. He marr. Mary Kirkpatrick, who died 26th Jan. 1701, and had John, Hendret, and Hendret.-Test. (Dumf.), and Dumf. Reg. (Bur.), MS. Acc. of Min. 1689, Tombst.]
1687. FRANCIS IRVING, A.M., above-mentioned. Decreet was passed against him 16th July 1671, yet was indulged at Symington, Ayrsh., by the Privy Council 3d Sept. 1672, but declined to accept it; he was denounced 16th July 1674 for keeping conventicles, intercommed 3d Aug. 1676, and otherwise suffered during the period of Episcopacy, having been imprisoned several years in the tolbooths of Dumfries and Edinburgh, and in the Bass May 1679, from which he was only liberated 11th July after, on binding himself to peaceable behaviour, and not to preach, or administer the sacraments at field conventicles. He went to Holland, but returned in 1687, and preached in the meeting-house at Dumfries, was restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690, and died 8th Dec. 1695, in his 85th year and 53d min. He marr. Margaret Morrison, who died 14th Nov. 1686, and had three daugh., Margaret, Sarah, who marr.
