1802. JAMES RAE, tutor in the family of Douglas of Kellhead, where he succeeded Van Mildert, afterwards Bishop of Durham; pres. by George Maxwell, Esq. of Carruchan in Jan. ord. 9th Sept.; trans. to Parton 2d May 1809.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg.]

 

1809. JOHN CROCKET, licen. by the Presb. 5tb July 1803, pres. by Geo. Maxwell, Esq. of Carruchan in June, and ord. 31st Aug. 1809; died father of the Synod 20th June 1867, in 90th age and 58th min. He was a class-fellow of Lord Cockburn, who cultivated and esteemed his society, and was not only endowed with a clear and vigorous intellect, a sound and correct taste, and a wonderfully retentive memory, but was a good scholar, with a store of clerical and literary anecdotes. He marr. 25th April 1814, Margaret, eldest daugh. of James Goldie, Esq. of Knockauchly, and has four sons and two daughters.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iv.)-[Presb., and Syn. KIRKMAHOE.

The church was dedicated to St. Quintin, and previous to the Reformation the Rector was one of the Prebends of Glasgow. The parish was supplied by JOHN THROUGTOUN, or THROKTOUN, exhorter, from 1567, reader, to 1579.

 

1579. JOHN SINCLAIR, Reader at Dumfries 1576-1578; Holywood, was also in the charge. -(Reg. Assig.]

 

1585. ALEXANDER GARDINER, removed from Lochmaben, but having it also in charge; be was nominated by the Privy Council commissioner for the maintenance and defence of the Protestant religion in Annandale 6th March 1589; in 1590 Dunscore was also included in the charge, the vicarage of which be possessed when he died (before 18th Nov.) 1602.-[Reg. 1607. GEORGE HARRAT, A.M., trans. from Dunscore; he gave viij li. xiij s. towards building the Library and Univ. of Glasgow 1st Aug. 1632, and died in June 1646, aged about 68. He marr. Susanna, daugh. of Robert Thomsone, goldsmith, in right of whom he entered burges and guild brother of Edinburgh 28th June 1615, and had a. son, George, Lieutenant Colonel.-[Reg. 1645. FRANCIS IRVING, A.M., trans. from Trailflat; deprived and confined to the parish on the restoration of Episcopacy; be was indulged at Symington, Ayrsh., by the Privy Council 3d Sept. 1672, but declined to accept it.-[Tombst., Presb., and Dumfries Sess. 1663. WILLIAM DALGARNO, A.M., trans. from Penicuik; continued 27th April 1664, and was trans. to Mauchline about 1665.-[Penicuik Sess., and Syn. (Jedburgh Presb.) Reg.]

 

1666. JOHN WALLACE, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh in July 1663; vacated,
