KIRKGUNZEON.

The church was dedicated to St Winnan. The parish was supplied by PATRICK LOCHE, reader, from Beltyn 1567 to 1585.

 

1586. JOHN LITTIL, trans. from Lochrutton; Or, and Kirkpatrick-in-the-Muir, alias Durham, were also in the charge; continued in 1588, and returned to Lochrutton, but again returned 1593.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1615. PATRICK SCHEVES, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1600. -[Act. Rect. Univ. S'. And., Reg. Assig.]

 

1636. GAVIN HAMMILTOUNE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1632; continued 18th July 1640.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Test. Reg. (Dumf.), Commiss. to Ass. 1638, Wodrow MSS., &c.]

 

1643. JAMES MAXWELL, A.M., son of Mr George M., min. of Mearns, had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1628; continued 2d July 1661, and was confined to the parish.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Urr Sess., and Presb. Reg., Wodrow's Hist.]

 

16-. HUGH NISBET, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 14th July 1659; he gave in an attested list of disorderly in his parish in Sept. 1684, was outed by the rabble in 1689, and is said to have been received into communion; he died at Edinburgh 4th Feb. 1696, aged about 57.-[Edin. 1702. JOHN MILLAR, licen. by the Presb. of Ayr 26th Nov. 1701, called in April, and ord. 24th Sept. 1702; died 23d Feb. 1746, in 44th min., having recommended religion by example as well as by precept. He marr. 20th April 1704, Agnes Mitchelson, who died 18th March 1755, and had three daugh., Agnes, Mary, and Elizabeth-[Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg. (Dumf.), Tombst., &c.]

 

1747. WILLIAM CLARKE, passed secondary trials with a view to Parton in 1744, but the proceedings were stopped as his call had not been sustained by the Commission of Assembly, called 27th Nov. 1746, and ord. 4th Aug. succeeding; died 23d Nov. 1786, in his 75th year and 40th min. Though a reel foot married his personal appearance, yet his enlightened compositions, exemplary conduct, and warmth of benevolence established and supported his character. He marr. 27th April 1732, Janet only daugh. of Mr Tho. M'Kimnel, min. of Urr; she died 15th Aug. 1776, aged 45, and had Dr Thomas, physician, Kingston, Jamaica, Robert, and William. -[Presb., Kirkcudbright Presb., and Syn. 1786. JAMES HERON, son of Mr George H., min. of Terregles, licen. by the Presb. of Kirkcudbright 5th April 1780, and ord. by them 5th Feb. 1784 as min. to the Presbyterian congregation at Witherington, called to this par. 29th April, and adm. (assist. and suc.) 8th June 1786, got a church built in 1790, and died 30th July 1801, in his 47th year and 18th min. He was a candid, upright, and benevolent man, of liberal sentiments and sincere piety. He marr. Mary
