1714. JOHN CAMPBELL, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 6th March 1700, called by the Presb. jure devoluto 26th May, and ord. 19th Aug. 1714; died 1st April 1733, aged about 53, in 19th min. He marr. 13th Nov. 1717, Mary, daugh. of Mr John Michelson, merchant, Dumfries, and had a son, John, who went to sea in the humblest capacity, yet by distinguished bravery and skill rose to eminence in the Navy, attended Anson, the navigator, in his voyage, and was rewarded by the commission of Vice-Admiral of the Red, and died at London in 1790.-[Edin. 1733. WILLIAM STEWART, pres. by the Commissioners for Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover in May, and ord. (by a committee of Synod, with such members of Presb. as were willing to join) 25th Oct; demitted 14th Oct. 1743, which was accepted 8th Feb. 1744, and died 20th Dec. 1761, in 29th min. He marr. Mary daugh. of Mr Robert Patoun, one of the min. of Dumfries ; she died 15th Dec. 1781.-[Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg. (Dumf ), &c.]

 

1745. JAMES HOGG, licen. by the Presb. of Linlithgow 5th March 17 35, became tutor to the five sons of Sir Charles Douglas of Kellhead, called 27th Nov. 1744, and ord. 3d Sept. thereafter; trans. to Linlithgow 19th June 1759.-[Carlyle's Autob., Presb., and Syn. Reg.]

 

1760. JAMES ALEXANDER, licen. by the Presb. of Dunoon 6th Sept. 1756, pres. by Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover in Feb., and ord. 21st Aug. 1760; he got a new church built in 1776, and died 4th Nov. 1788, in his 61st year, and 29th min. He marr. Janet Black, who died 6th Feb. 1766, and had a son and three daugh. Elizabeth, the last surviving, marr. Richard Wood, Esq., Surgeon, R.N., and died in 1859, at the venerable age of 99.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Sinclair's xv., and new St. Acc. iv., &c.]

 

1789. EDWARD NEILSON, licen. by the Presb. 3d Aug. 1784; he was represented by Burns the poet, 23d March 1789, as "a very particular acquaintance on his way for France to wait on his Grace," and was pres. by William, Duke of Queensberry, 2d April, and ord. 17th Sept. same year; died 26th Jan. 1824, in 67th age, and 35th min. He marr., 1st, May daugh. of the Rev. James Little of Colvend, and had Helen, who marr. Mr William Cririe, merchant, Dumfries, and Isabella, who marr. Gilbert Sinclair, Esq., M.D., Jamaica; 2dly, 25th Dec. 1822, Jane Martin, who died 31st March 1846.-Publication-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. xv.).-[Presb., and Syn. 1824. THOMAS GRIERSOR, A.M., son of the Rev. William G., min. of Glencairn, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh (where his degree was conferred 19th June 1817), licen. by the Presb. of Penpont 5th April 1813, pres. by Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch, and his curators in March, and ord. 16th Sept. 1824; died 15th July 1854, in 30th min. He marr. 23d Aug. 1827, Russel, daugh. of Josias Walker, Professor of Humanity in the Univ. of Glasgow. Publications-Ten Letters on Church Patronage, Edin. 1836, fcp. 8vo.
