HOLYWOOD. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey thereof, which was connected with the Abbey of Dercongal. The parish was supplied by MUNGO MAKGE, Reader, from Beltyn 1567 to 1578, and HERCUS STEWART from 4th May 1580 till he died in 1582.
1586. JAMES MAXWELL, trans. from Dunscore, having charge of Lochrutton and Newabbey. He died 4th Dec. 1588, and had in chalmer geir, abulziements and buiks, value xx li. He left to his fader, John M., " the buik of Erasmus ;" and had two brothers, John and Andrew, who are also mentioned.-[Reg. Assig., Test. Reg]

1608. ROBERT FRENSCHE, was on the Exercise at Irvine 13th Nov. 1602 and had probably been previously at Covington; died before 8th Nov. 1617. He left a son, James, who was served heir to his uncle Thomas 30th March 1636, and two daugh., Isobel, and another, who marr. James Gilray, in Walstoune.-[Booke of the Kirk, Reg. 1617. ADAM KAE, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 31st July 1613, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 18th Nov. 1617. He preached two Sabbaths at Holywood, and one at Keir in turn, and died at House of Muir, on bis way from Edinburgh, 24th July 1632, aged about 39. [WILLIAM SIBBALD, A.M., of St. Andrews in 1612, and a min. in London in 1630, was pres. to H. and Keir by James VI. 41h Sept. 1632, and 3d July 1633, and JAMES MAXWELL, A.M. of Glasgow 1628, was Ares. to H. and Keir by James VI. 11th Feb. 1633, but neither of the pres. was carried out.-Reg. 1633. JOHN NYMMO, A. M., trans. from Torthorwald, gave xx li towards building the Library and Univ. of Glasgow about 1633.
