Isobel Lawson, relict, died in Feb. 1754. An only son, John, became merchant, Dumfries. [Edin. Grad., Presb., and Test Beg. (Dumf.), Tombst.]

 

1715. JOHN WATSON, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th April 1702, licen. by the Presb. of Stirling 7th Sept. 1709, called 23rd Jan., and by the Presb. jure devoluto 5th, and ord 21st April 1715; died 18th Dec. 1724, in 46th age and 20th min. A due measure of learning and knowledge, corrected by a sound judgment, well fitted him to instruct and reform, and enabled him with fidelity to employ himself in the duties of his function, nor was he more zealous than successful in improving those committed to his care. He continued to preach, though with much bodily infirmity, till within a few days of his death. He marr. Marion Gilchrist, who subsequently marr. his successor, and had John, Helen, and Lilias.[Edin. 1725. LUKE GIBSON, born in the par. of Closeburn, licen. by the Presb. of Penpont 3rd Jan. 1722, called unanimously 8th July, and ord. 23d Sept. 1725; died 30th Jan. 1760, at an advanced age, in 35th min. To a quickness of natural parts, and an uncommon study and knowledge of the Scriptures in their original languages, he added punctuality and zeal in discharging the duties of his office, which, with genuine piety, firmness of mind, and frankness of manner, rendered him dear to all with whom he was connected. He marr. 2d Oct. 1728, Marion Gilchrist, relict of his predecessor, she died 15th Feb. 1751, in her 58th year, and had an only son, James, of Kelton, merchant in Virginia.-[Presb., Sess., and Syn. 1761. JAMES FINNAN, pres. by George II. 9th May 1760, and ord. 19th March following ; had the church rebuilt in 1771, and was trans. to Kirkpatrick-Irongray 7th Feb. 1775.[Presb. Sess., and Syn. Reg., Sinclair's St. Ac. xvii.]

 

1775. JAMES LITTLE, son of Mr Arch. Little, min. of Kirkpatrick-Irongray, licen. by the Presb. of Annan, pres. by Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover 15th April, and ord. 21st Sept.; died 23d Dec. 1811, in his 65th year and 37th min. He marr., 1st, 24th Aug. 1 7 7b, Elizabeth Clarke, who died 29th March 1801, and had three sons and nine daugh., of whom May marr. the Rev. Edward Neilson of Kirkbean;  2dlg, 21st May 1804, Ann Fraser, who died 26th Sept. 1828, and had two sons and a daughter.-Publication-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. xvii.).-[Presb., and Syn. 1812. ANDREW M'CULLOCH, licen. by the Presb. of Wigton 22d March 1808, pres. by George, Prince Regent 19th May, and ord. 13th Aug. 1812; died 10th May 1844, in 32d min. SOUTHWICK.

Previous to the Reformation the rector was Chancellor of the Chapel Royal of Stirling. The parish was supplied by GEORGE OLIFEIR, exhorter in 1567, and united to Colvend before 1650.
