PRESBYTERY OF DUMFRIES p. 576
COLVEND. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the collegiate church of Lincluden. The parish was supplied by JOHN LOGAN, reader from 1567 to Beltyn 1570, ROBERT KESSEN from 1570, ROBERT CASS, in 1574, Mr ARCHIBALD MENZIES, 1576 to 1578, and JOHN TAILZEOUR, from 1st July 1579 to 1591.
1617. DAVID HOPE, removed from Southwick, he entered burges and guild brother of Edinburgh 30th July 1617, and gave xx Ii towards building the Library of the Univ. of Glasgow in 1632, and died 8th July 1650.-[Edin. 1651. ALEXANDER SMITH, A.M., trans. from Garrel and Dungree, called in Nov. and adm. 25th Dec.; deprived by the Acts of Parliament the 11th June, and of the Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was cited before the Privy Council 24th March 1663, with others, when they promised to obey the Acts of Parliament and Council, remove from their manses and parishes, and desist from preaching. Having taken up his abode at Leith, he was again called before the Privy Council in July 1664, for keeping conventicles (only preaching in a private house); being considered disrespectful to Archbishop Sharp, one of their number, however, he was ordered to be led by the town-hangman to the thieves hole, and to be confined by irons on his feet and legs, where he continued three days, until the kindness of the citizens made the bishops ashamed; he was next removed to another room, where he fell sick, and was in danger of his life. Shortly after he was banished by the court of High Commission to an uninhabited island in Shetland, where barley was his only food, and wreck and sea-weed his only fuel. He was brought from thence in 1668, committed to the tolbooth of Edinburgh, and after fourteen day's confinement was transferred to Orkney, and detained in the island of North Ronaldshay. He returned to Edinburgh, however, and died at the Castle bill 21st Feb. 1673, in 26th min. in He marr. Feb. 1646, Helen Newall of Dumfries-[Edin. Grad., Presb., Dumf. (Marr.), and Edin. Reg. 1671. ROBERT STRACHAN, A.M., son of Mr John S., min. of Kincardine-O’Neil, attained his degree at the Univ. and King's College Aberdeen 12th July 1660; died in March 1685, aged about 45. Ane small number of books, with the insicht &c., were estimat at lxvj li. xiij s. iiij d. Frie geir, d.d., jm viijc lx li. vij s. iiij d. He marr. 11th July 1672, Marjorie, daugh. of Mr John Balvaird, min. of Kirkden; she survived him, and had John, James, Elizabeth, Kathrine, Margaret, and Marjorie.-[Fasti Aberd., Kirkden Sess., Test. 168-?. JAMES WILSON, A.M., trans. from Torthorwald, outed by the rabble in 1689, and died in 1695, aged about 39.-[DMS. Acc. of Min. 1689.]
1692. ROBERT BROUNE, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1677, called in Sept. and ord. 4th Oct., 1692; trans. to Roxburgh 16th June 1702.-[Edin. Grad., Presb. Reg.]
1702. JOHN MARTINE, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 13th July 1696, called in Sept. and ord. 19th Nov. 1702; died 28th Dec. 1710; aged about 35, in 9th min. |
