He marr. 24th June 1807, Frances, daugh. of Joseph Brookes, Esq. of Ulverstone, merchant, Liverpool; she died 28th Sept. 1837, and had the Rev. Joseph Rogers Duncan, min. of Tortherwald, Rev. THIRD CHARGE.

Constituted by the Gen. Assembly as ST. MARY'S parish quoad sacra, was opened in 1839, and erected a quoad sacra par. by the Court of Teinds 10th March 1854.

 

1835. ANDREW FYFE, ord. to the Relief congregation at Biggar in Aug. 1807, and adm. to that of Dumfries in 1808, was received into Communion, with his congregation, 4th Aug. 1835; retired on an annual allowance, and died at St. Andrews, while officiating as missionary at Strathkinness, 12th April 1854, aged 69, in 47th min. He marr. and had a family. -[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

CAERLAVEROCK.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the collegiate church of Lincluden. The parish was supplied by JOHN PATERSON, reader, from Beltyn, 1568, and as Vicar, 1570.

 

1574. NINIAN DALZELL, removed from Dumfries; Torthorrald, Tynwald, and Traillflat were also in the charge, with a stipend of lxvi 1i xiij s iiij d. He became schoolmaster at Dumfries, renounced the Protestant faith, and, “corrupting the youth of his school with Papistrie," was deposed by the Assembly in 1579, " quhill as good experience be bad of his good lyfe and behaviour as they have of his defectioun and apostacie." 1586. ARCHIBALD SINCLAIR, trans. from Southwick; continued in 1588, but died before 21st May 1615.-[Reg. Assig., et Sec Sigill.]

 

1605. DAVID ROGERS, A.M., trans. from Dalgarno, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 3d Dec. He was settled at St Mungo in 1612.-[Reg. Assig., et Sec. Sigill.]

 

[Mr ROBERT HAMMILTOUN, son of John H. of Aikinheid, was Ares. to the Vicarage by James VI. 3d Aug. 1609, (whether he was settled does not appear.)-[Reg. Pres.]

 

161-?. HALBERT GLEDSTANIS, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1590; trans. to Troquire in 1613.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Reg. Sec. Sigill.]

 

1615. WILLIAM MACJOR, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 20th May; gave xl merks toward building the Library of the Univ. of Glasgow in 1632, was a member of the Assembly 1638, confined to the parish in 1662, and died in Jan. 1669, leaving a son, Mr William, afterwards min. of Heriot.-[Reg.
