respected; while his pulpit exhibitions, distinguished by good sense, showed he was no mean theologian. He marr., 1st, 29th April 1783, Penelope, daugh. of the Rev. John Marshall, Tinwald, she died 13th July 1793, and had a daugh. Wilhelmina, who marr. the Rev. Jacob Richardson, Largs; 2dly, 20th Nov. 1797, Janet, daugh. of Will. 1830. ROBERT WALLACE, trans. from Kirkpatrick, Durham, pres. by William IV. (being his first to a Scottish benefice) in July, and adm. 21st Oct; had D.D. from the Univ. of Glasgow in March 1837; died 20th Nov. 1864, in 76th age, and 47th min., distinguished for the evangelical tone of his discourses, and for a tenderness of feeling, which thrilled instinctively to every appeal, and prompted him to a life of devoted piety and beneficence. He marr., 4th Dec. 1820, Elizabeth Smith of Cross-Canonbie, and had six sons and three daugh., of whom Jardine is min. of Traquair, and Agnes wife of the Rev. James Williamson, Chaplain at Allahabad.-[Pres. Reg., &c..]

 

SECOND CHARGE.

Was proposed in 1648, erected in 1658, but in abeyance during Episcopacy. It was uncollegiated, and the New Church opened in 1727.

 

1658. GEORGE CAMPBELL, A.M., son of George C., writer, and first of the profession who settled in Inverary, though M'Ure states he was son of John C. of Otter; was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1656, and studied theology in that of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. 20th July 1658, and called by the Magistrates, Kirk-session, and burgesses same day; he had also a call from the Session of Glasgow, on which there was a communication from that city 7th Sept., desiring the Presb. and Burgh would submit the plea between them anent him to indifferent men, chosen by both parties, and that they would forbear to put him to the rest of his trials until they had time to determine the business, " whilk desyres being considered, the Presb., Magistrates, and burgesses altogether refuse to grant, in respect the lyke was never practised within the Kirk of Scotland." On this " the magistrates and burgesses gave the Presb. hearty thanks for their paines in this business, and intreated them to haisten his trials." which being completed, he was adm., with imposition of hands, 1th Oct. following, and declared to succeed to the first charge on the dea,th of the incumbent. He was seized att Edinburgh, with his colleague, in 1661, for disobeying the order for keeping the anniversary of his Majesty's restoration, and deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of the Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. The Privy Council indulged him at Londoun 3d Sept. 1672, but like many others he refused its acceptance, was again seized at Edinburgh 17th Sept. 1684, and after being liberated retreated to Holland, and returned in 1687, taking possession of the Ist charge.-[Mun.
