1648. HEW HENRYSONE, A.M., trans. from Dalry in Glenkens, pres. by Charles I. 24th Dec. 1647, adm. , and inst. 30th Nov. thereafter. In 1654 he was appointed by the Council of England one of those for sanctioning admissions to the ministry in Dumfries and Galloway. Deprived on the re-establishment of Episcopacy at the Restoration, he and his colleague `vere imprisoned at Edinburgh in 1661 for refusing to observe the anniversary of his majesty's restoration. The stipend due him for 1662 was ordained by the Privy Council, 11th Dec., to be paid to his successor. His daugh., Rosina, marr. Mr Geo. 1662. JAMES CHALMERS, A.M., trans. from Cullen, adm. before 11th Dec., when the Privy Council ordained that as he had been at great charges and pains in pursuing his Majesty's interest in church and state, he should have the stipend due to his predecessor for the year, as well as that due him by his former parish. 1668. ALEXANDER CAIRNOROSS, A.M., trans. from Edinburgh (Trinity College Ch.), adm. before 30th Aug.; promoted to the Bishopric of Brechin in 1684.-[Sess. Reg., Sinclair's St. Acc. v., Nisbet's Her. i., Crichton's Mem. of Blackadder, &c.]

 

1685. RICHARD BROWN, A.M., trans. from Biggar, adm. before 1st Nov.; deprived by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690, restoring the Presbyterian ministers; he died at Edinburgh 18th Feb. 1707, in 70th age. - [MS Acc. of Min. 1689, Sess., Test., and Edin. Reg. (Bur.)]

 

1687. GEORGE CAMPRELL, A. M., formerly in 2d Charge, preached in the meeting-house after the toleration in 1687, was restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690, and was a member of Assembly same year; trans. to Edinburgh (Old Ch.), and to the Chair of Divinity in the Univ. there 28th Oct. same year. 1694. WILLIAM VETCH, A.M., trans. from Peebles, called 17th Oct. 1692, adm. in Sept. 1694, was four times Moderator of Synod, and demitted 8th Dec. 1714, which was accepted 1st Feb. after; he died 8th May 1722, in his 83d year, and 51st min. He was a person ofgreat sagacity, whose wits had been sharpened by his very singular and hair-breadth escapes in the days of persecution. When his tried friend, Lord Minto (Sir Gilb. Elliot), came on the circuit, lie always spent some time with him, and once humorously reminded him of his former peril, -" Ah ! Willie, Willie, had it no' been for me, the pyets had been pyking your pate on the Nether-Bow Port ;" but his host rejoined, " Ah ! Gibbie, Gibbie, had it no' been for me, ye would ha'e been writing papers yet for a plack the page." He marr. 23d Nov. 1664, Marion Fairlie, descended from the ancient house of Braid, she died 9th May 1722, and was buried on the same day, and in the same grave with her husband; issue, five sons and five daugh., of whom two fell in the unfortunate expedition to Darien, Ebenezer was min. of Ayr, Elizabeth marc. David M'Culloch of Ardwell, Sarah marr. Mr James Young of Guiliehill, Agnes marr.
