PRESBYTERY OF DUMFRIES p. 568

 

1585. ALEXANDER FORSYTH; he was present at the Presb. of Edinburgh 5th Sept. 1587. He was trans. to Craigie in the year following.-[Reg. Assig., Edin. Presb. Reg.]

 

1586. HEW FULLERTOUN, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1578; he was appointed by the Privy Council 6th March, one of their commissioners for the preservation of true religion within the Sheriffdom of Dumfries, and was a member of the Assembly 1590, continued in 1599, and was trans. to Kilmarnock in 1601.-[Mun. 1605. THOMAS RAMSAY, A.M., nephew of Andrew Scott, wright, Leith, whom he succeeded as heir, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 19th Aug. 1595; he was appointed at Candlemass 1604 to supply churches in the City of Edinburgh, for which he received xl. li. from the Town Council 20th July following, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 15th Feb., and adm. before 16th Oct. 1605; nominated constant Moderator of Presb. by the Assembly 1606, and they were charged by the Privy Council, 17th Jan. following, to receive him as such, within twenty-four hours after notice, under pain of rebellion; pres. to Redkirk by James VI. 24th Oct. 1608. He was a member of the Assemblies 1608 and 1610, though he dissented from the Heads or Articles there agreed to, and of that of Perth in 1618 ; also of the Courts of High Commission March 1610, and 4th Oct. 1634. He gave 1. merks towards building the Library of the Univ. of Glasgow about 1632. In 1637 he was one of two appointed to reside in Edinburgh as commissioners for the ministers at the Tables. His last appearance was 21st Dec. same year, in speaking before the Privy Council, and defending the opposition to the Canons and Service-Book. On two occasions, at least, he signalized himself in opposing the supporters of Popery. He marr. lst Margaret Brown, and had William, Marion, Robert, Margaret, Thomas, and George; 2dly, 18th Dec. 1625, Elizabeth Johnstone, relict of Poolk, parishioner of Edinburgh, she died in Dec. 1654, and had a daugh. Agnes, who inarr. John Richardson, merchant, and afterward John Burgess, bailie of Dumfries-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Sec. Sigill., and Assig., Booke of the Kirk, Calderwood, and Stevenson's Hist., Baillie's Lett., Privy Counc., Edin. Counc., Test., Canongate (Marr.) and Dumfries Reg. (Bapt. and Death.), Mun. Univ. 1638. JAMES HAMILTOUN, nephew of Viscount Claneboy, was educated for the ministry in Scotland, and after officiating for a time as steward or agent to his uncle, was ord. in 1625 by Robert, Bishop of Down, as min. at Ballywalter, but was deposed by Henry, the succeeding Bishop, for refusing the Service-Book and Ceremonies, this sentence was declared null and void in law by Parliament in 1641; adm. in 1638, was a member of Assembly that year, and pres. by Charles I. 8th Nov. 1641. He was commissioned by the Assemblies 1642, 1643, to visit the Presbyterians in the North of Ireland. In returning from the latter visit, he and others were captured by the notorious Colkitto, and committed prisoner to Mingary Castle, whence he was liberated only after a tedious confinement, and great suffering for want of the comforts and necessaries of life; trans. to Edinburgh in Aug. 1647.-[Livingston's Life, Reid's Ireland, Blair's Autob., Reg.
