PRESBYTERY OF SELKIRK p. 564

 

at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1668, was tutor to the family of Douglas of Cavers, but at Ochiltree in 1676, and governor to Francis Lord Semple in 1678. In the year following he was imprisoned some weeks at Glasgow. He afterwards went abroad with some pupils, but returned, and was ready to be brought on trials at the General meeting of Presbyterians 6th July 1687, ord. (at Wheathope) 5th Feb. 1690; he was a member of the Assembly, and also of the Commission for visiting Schools and Colleges same year; trans. to Ashkirk in 1691.[Edin. Grad., Lothian Syn., and Presb. 1691. JOHN RUTHERFORD, schoolmaster of Selkirk, was ready to be brought on trials at the general meeting of Presbyterians 6th July 1687, called , and ord. 30th Sept. 1691; died 8th May 1710, in his 69th year, and 19th min. His son, Dr John, known as the Yarrow Doctor, became Professor of the Practice of Medicine in the Univ. of Edinburgh, and was maternal grandfather of Sir Walter Scott.-[Bannatyne Miscell. ii., Presb., Lothian Syn. and Test. 1711. WILLIAM BANNATYNE, one of the Morning Lecturers in Edinburgh, called 4th Oct. 1710, and ord. 25th April succeeding; died 17th Jan. 1753, in 42d min. He marr. 1st, in Dec. 1717 Euphan, daugh. of Mr Muir, in the parish of Kilwinning; 2dly, Isobel Lundie, who (lied at Glasgow 22d Jan. 1789.-[Presb., and Dunsyre Sess. Reg.]

 

1753. JAMES MASON, trans. from Lessudden, called 27th June, pres. by George II. -, and adm. 6th Nov.; died 12th Jan. 1764, in 25th min. Elisabeth Kirkwood, his relict, died 2d April 1801.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1765. JAMES LORIMER, trans. from Mouswald, pres. by George III. 23d Feb. 1764, and adm. 6th Feb. following; he had D. D. from the Univ. of Edinburgh 18th July 1771, and died 21st Nov. 1775, in 31st min. He marr. 1776. ROBERT CRAMOND, D.D., ord. 22d May 1765 as min. of the Presbyterian congregation at Etal. He had his degree from the Univ. and Marischal College, Aberdeen, 1st Sept. 1774, was pres. by George III. 26th Jan., and adm. 12th June 1776; died 14th Feb. 1791, in his 50th year and 26th min. Mrs C. died 7th April 1767; he marr. 2dly, Isabella Young, who survived him, and had two daugh., Jane, and Isabella Liddell, who marr. Mr Richard Young, brewer, Edinburgh.-[Presb. 1791. ROBERT RUSSELL, A..M., trans. from Etterick, pres. by George III. in April, and adm. 1st Sept. In 1805 he was nominated by Francis, Lord Napier, Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly, as chaplain to his Grace, which office he retained for thirtyseven years; and had D.D. from the Univ. of Edinburgh 3d April 1811. His parishioners in 1844 presented him with a massive piece of silver plate as a token of their attachment. He (lied father of the Synod 18th March 1847, in his 82d year and 57th min. During his lengthened incumbency he was never confined to bed a whole day, not even at the last,-was only two Sundays out of church, and no medical man ever prescribed for him till three days before his death. He bequeathed L.100 for the religious instruction of the young in the parish. Being of a robust frame, and handsome appearance when a young man, he was jocularly termed
