YARROW. Formerly ST. MARy'S KIRK OF THE LowEs, or the FORREST. A presentation to the Vicarage Pensionary was issued by James VI. to ALEXANDER DOUGLAS 12th Feb. 1577. The Church was removed to its present site in 1640.
1607. JAMES SCOTT, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th July 1599; he was suspected by the Presb. 4th Oct. 1608, "of being our guid ane companion in drinking and beiring company both in Edinburgh and at home, as negligent in discipline, and in using of his buik, and preparing of his pepil. The brethren commends he be not offensive in tym coming, or els they will proceed against him." He was also admonished 2d Sept. 1610, having "never administered the communion, and that he be grave in his behaviour." He was non-resident 13th Nov. 1618, and as " it cannot be mendit, he is exhorted to use diligence, and to find the nearest roume for remaining among his people." He died in 1634, aged about 55.-[Reg. 1635. JAMES FISCHER, trans. from Southdean, pres. by Charles I. 7th Jan.; he gave xx li towards building the Library in the College of Glasgow 25th May 1637, and died in 1640, in 14th min.-[Reg. Pres., Sec. Sigill., and Old Dec. ii., iii., Wodrow MSS., Connell on Tithes ii., Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii.]
1641. WILLIAM ELIOT, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of St. Andrews 11th May 1637, pres. by Charles I. 20th Jan. and adm. 16th June, 1641; not conforming to Episcopacy, he was confined to his parish in 1662.-[Act. 1666. JOHN CLAPPERTON, A.M., trans. from Yetholm, pres. by Charles II. 21st Nov. 1665, adm. after 13th Feb. following; died in 1679, aged about 57. He had a son, Samuel, and a daugh. Margaret.-[Min.-book Reg. Priv. Seal, Kelso, and Peebles Presb. Reg., Inq. Ret. Gen. 8103, 8104.]
1679. WILLIAM ELIOT, A.M., above noticed, was indulged by the Privy Council 18th Dec.; died in Nov. 1685, aged about 68, in 45th min. Summa of debts awin in viijm iijc xxxiii li xiij s. iiii d. His brother, Thomas E., in Borthwickshiels, became executor.-[Wodrow's Hist., Test. Reg. (Peebles).]
1680. JAMES MURRAY, A.M., trans. from Borgue, pres. by Charles II. 16th Jan.; he was accused before the Privy Council 17th Sept. 1689, of not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, not praying for their majestics William and Mary and for delating to the circuit, such of his parishioners as withdrew from his preaching in 1684, but acquitted, it being found he bad obeyed the Proclamation. He was afterwards outed by the rabble, and the parish declared vacant 3d July 1691.-[Min.-book., Reg. Priv. Seal, MS. Acc. of Min. 1689, Peterkin's Constitut. of the Church.]
