against Mr M., with remarks, Hawick, 1785, 8vo.-[Presb., and Stirling Presb. Reg., Scots Mag. xlvi., xlvii., Tombst., Bower's Descrip., &c.]

1788. GEORGE THOMSON, licen. by the Presb. of Dunblane, 4th July 1786, called 27th March, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 23d Oct. 1788. An augmentation of stipend having been asked by the incumbent, Mr T. put in a claim stating that, as he did the whole of the clerical duties, his case should be considered by the Court in granting it. Though doubts were entertained respecting the competency of the assistants claim, their Lordships listened to his application, and granted him the whole of the augmentation, 6th Dec. 1797. He got the church removed from the Abbey and a new one built at a little distance in 1810, and died 22d Nov. 1835, in his 77th year and 48th min. Notwithstanding his getting the augmentation, his income was small, and having a wife and family, the hardship of his case became a subject of public conversation during the scarcity and high price of provisions. This reaching the ears of the Rev. Dr Johnston, North Leith, a man of the warmest benevolence, he immediately began a subscription in his favour, and having obtained a considerable sum he forwarded it with a letter. On receiving it, Mr T. instantly wrote the Dr expressing his grateful acknowledgements, but commanding him forthwith to repay every farthing of it to the donors, as he and his family were content with their humble fare without eleemosynary aid from either the Dr or his friends. Besides a spirit of independence, guileless simplicity was another trait in his character; meeting on the road a person whom he had never before seen, travelling towards Lauder, he asked him to carry his watch to the watchmaker there, that it might be repaired. As might have been expected, however, it neither found its way to the artizan nor the owner. He marr. Margaret, daugh. of the Rev. Robert Gillon, Lessudden, she died 11th June 1831, and had George, a preacher, author of the New Stat. Account of the Parish, tutor in the family of Sir Walter Scott (who several times interested himself unsuccessfully in his behalf), and who from his eccentricity and kindness is understood to have been the original of Dominie Sampson, Robert Gillon, writer, Melrose, Thomas, a student of divinity, Mary Ann, who marr. Mr Alexander Burnet, rector of the United Schools, Jedburgh, Margaret, &c.-Publication-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St Acc. ix.).-[Presb. Reg., Bower's Descrip., New St Acc. iii., Connell on Tithes ii., &c.]

1836. WILLIAM MURRAY, a native of Selkirkshire, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, became tutor in the family of Major Hope Johnston, licen. by the Presb. of Langholm, pres. by Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry in Jan., and ord. 10th June; died 13th Sept. 1865, in 67th age, and 30th min. He marr. 1st sister of the Rev. Adam Cunningham, Crailing, and had a son Andrew; 2dly 17th Oct. 1848 Jessie Russell, second daugh. of John Easton, Esq., merchant, Edinburgh.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]
