LILLIESLEAF. Previous to the Reformation the church was a prebend of Glasgow. It was supplied by ARCHIBALD SYMsouN, reader, from 1574 to 1580.
1588. THOMAS WILKIE, A.M., studied at St. Leonard's College, and was laureated at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1583, was reader in 1586. He admitted the gudewife of Sinton, in the par. of Ashkirk, to the Lord's Supper, " she being a contemner of her awin min., and of her awin kirk;" the Presb., 19th Sept. 1615, were greatly offended, and rebuked him for doing it, declaring "if he do so again he will be suspended from his office." He continued 28th Oct. 1638. While preaching he frequently shed tears. He was probably father of Mr Thomas, min. of Crailing, and of Mr William, who follows.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Reg. 1640. WILLIAM WILKIE, A.M., probably son of the preceding, graduated at the rnin. of St. Andrews in 1614. He was interrupted while preaching at Melrose, at mid-sermon, 30th Aug. 1640, because of the Englishmen that came from Berwick to Dunse. 1674. JOHN CHISHOLME, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1663, licen. by George, Bishop of Edinburgh, 2d Oct. 1667; he was cited before the Privy Council 10th Nov. 1681 for dissuading the magistrates of Peebles from taking the Test. Deprived by the Privy Council 3d Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties', William and Mary, but for the late King, and not observing the thanksgiving and collection. He died in Edinburgh 12th Feb. 1701, aged about 58, and had a son, Robert.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., and Collat.., Jedburgh Presb., Galashiels, and Dumfries Sess., and Edin. Reg. 1691. MATTHEW COUPER, studied at the Univ. of Glasgow, and held a bursary of theology in 1676, he became schoolmaster of Mauchline and afterwards of Ochiltree, called 7th and ord. 29th Oct. 1691; trans. 7th Feb. 1695, and went to Ochiltree.-[Mun. 1695. WILLIAM HUNTER, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 3d July 1693, licen. by the Presb. of Kelso 28th Aug. 1694, called in March and ord. 2d May 1695; he was one of the twelve who gave in a representation and petition to the Gen. Assembly 11th May 1721 against an Act of the preceding Assembly, condemning the Marrow of Modern Divinity, from which they were ironically termed " The Twelve Apostles." He died 13th Nov. 1736, in his 79th year and 42d min. He acquired the property of Linthill, and marr. a daugh. of Mr James Hog, min. of Carnock. A daugh., Alison, marr.
