1697, called , and ord. 11th Aug. same year; died 16th Feb. 1730, in 33d min. " A judicious, plain, good man." He marr. 26th April 1698, Catherine, daugh. of Mark Gordon, in Cabertie, and had a son George who succeeded to the cure.-[Presb., and Edin. Reg. (Marr.), Boston's Mem., Tombst., Mun. Univ. 1730. GEORGE BYRES, son of the preceding, licen. by the Presb. 1st Dec. 1724, pres. by Anne, Duchess of Buccleuch, with consent of John Scot, younger of Ancrum in July and ord. 24th Sept. 1730; having adopted the principles of Independent church government, he demitted 1st Aug., which was accepted 7th Nov .1738. He retired for sometime to Edinburgh; latterly, however, he removed to Kippielaw, in the par. of Bowden, where he founded a small body of that persuasion. 1739. JAMES MASON, licen. by the Presb. of Kelso 2d March 1736, pres. by Francis, Duke of Buccleuch in April, and ord. 20th Sept. 1739; trans. to Yarrow 16th Oct. 1753.-[Presb. Reg.]

 

1754. ROBERT GILLON, ord. by the Presb. of Stirling 5th July 1753, as assistant or copastor in the High meeting-house Berwick-upon-Tweed, called 10th, and adm. 22d April 1754; died 5th Aug. 1785, in 33d min. He marr. 11th Oct. 1757, Mary Elliot, who died 21st Jan. 1807, and had a son Robert min. of Hawick, and a daugh. Margaret who marr. the Rev. George Thomson, Melrose.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1786. JAMES ERSKINE, trans. from Roberton, pres. by Henry, Duke of Buccleuch 23d Jan., and adm. 11th May; died 27th Aug. 1788, in 58th age, and 25th min. He marr. 2d Sept. 1768, Henrietta Scott, who died in 1818, and had Charles, writer, Melrose, William, a preacher of the gospel, surveyor of taxes for the county of Haddington, and another son in the army.[Presb., and Roberton Sess. 1810. PETER CRAW, tutor in the family of Robert Veitch, Esq. of Hawthornbank, licen. by the Presb. of Haddington 7th Sept. 1802, pres. by Henry, Duke of Buccleuch 19th June, and ord. 20th Sept. 1810; died 21st March 1834, in 60th age, and 24th min. He marr. 28th Aug. 1811 Margaret, second daugh. of Mr Richard Brown of Wylam, she died 13th May 1813; 2dly 8th Nov. 1825, Elizabeth, youngest daugh. of William Dunbar, Esq., Forres, she died 10th Jan. 1835.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iii.)- [Presb.
