PRESBYTERY OF SELKIRK p. 552
LESSUDDEN OR ST. BOSWELLS.
The church was dedicated to St. Mary, and, previous to the Reformation, belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh. It was supplied by Dean JOHN TURNBULL, reader, from 1576, who died in 1585.

1594. THOMAS MOFFET, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 11th Sept. 1585; deprived prior to 7th April 1596 for non-residence.-[Reg. Pres.]
1595. ALLAN LUNDIS, A.M., studied at St. Salvator's College, and had his degree from the Univ. of St. Andrews 10th Dec. 1586, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 7th April 1596. He was charged by the Presb. 20th Sept. 1608 "with negligence in his calling, and not ministering the communion, overstrait in exacting the vicarage, ane player at cairdis, blamit with beiring companie, and impatient of reproof and admonition"-"the brether admonish him gentlie." Being also admonished 3d April 1610, “to attend his ministrie, and increase in diligence, to be earnest for repairing his kirk, to teach in the afternoon, and to abstain from his carding, all which admonitions he took verie weel," trans. to Hassendean in 1610, which was changed for Channel-kirk in 1611.-[Act. 1613. DAVID UNSS, adm. (by the Synod at Peebles) in April, pres. by James VI. 14th June following; died in 1618, in 5th min.-[Presb. Reg., Reg. Sec. Sigill., and Pres., Tombst.]
1618. ANDREW DUNCANSONE, trans. from Bowden, adm. (at Peebles) 5th May, Ares. by James VI. 31st Oct. thereafter; he got a new church built in 1652, and continued 14th June 1654. He marr. Margaret, sister of William Riddell of Graitlawes, she died between 5th Jan. 1630 and 6th July 1631, and had Mr Andrew min. of Maxton, and Margaret.-[Presb., Jedburgh Presb., and Edin. Reg. 1662. JOHN SOMERVELL, A.M., descended from the laird of Cambusnethan in the fifth generation, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in July 1642; trans. to Kirkcowan after 26th April 1666.-[Edin,. Grad., Wodrow's Hist., Jedburgh Presb., and Galloway Syn. Reg., Mem. of the Somervilles]
1681. ROBERT ELLIOT, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1668, he was cited before the Privy Council 10th Nov. 1681 for dissuading the magistrates of Peebles from taking the Test., and deposed 27th Aug. 1690, for contumacy.-[Edin. Grad., Wodrow's Hist., MSS. Acc. of Min. 1689.]
1691. JOHN M'GOUNE, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1670, called 6th, and ord. 30th Oct. 1691; died 11th Feb. 1696, aged about 46, in 5th min.; Janet Corsane, his widow, died 8th March 1702.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb., and Dumfries Sess. Reg.]
