he adopted the principles of the Independents, yet continued undisturbed in possession of his church and benefice till he died, 24th Oct. 1756, in his 69th year, and 42d min. He was an esteemed friend of the elder Boston, who characterized him " a man of great gravity, piety, and tenderness; learned and judicious; well acquainted with books; a great preacher, delivering, in a taking manner, masterly thoughts in an unaffected style; endowed with a gift of prayer, in heavenly oratory, beyond any man that I ever knew; extremely modest and reserved in his temper; but a kind and affectionate friend." 1770. ROBERT DOUGLAS, son of Mr John D., min. of Jedburgh, licen. by the Presb. of Haddington 5th Sept. 1769, pres. by Hugh Scott, Esq. of Gala, 5th March, and ord. 19th July 1770. Had D.D. from the Univ. and King's College, Aberdeen, in May 1797; got a new church built in 1813, and died 15th Nov. 1820, in his 74th year and 51st min. He was so assiduous in promoting the manufactures and the interest of his parishioners by his advice and pecuniary assistance that he bas been termed the father of Galashiels. The manufacturers, deeply sensible of, and grateful for, his kindness, presented him with a silver cup in Oct. 1819. One of their number wrote verses on the occasion, in which, alluding to his befriending them in a time of need, he said
"There was a time, and not far gone, When you stood forth, and stood alone."
He marr. 4th June 1784 Robina, daugh. of Mr George Lothian, surgeon, Edinburgh, she died1lst Oct. 1837, and had George, merchant, Glasgow, Helen, who marr. the Rev.
