JAMES SMITH, licen. by the Presb. of Dumfries 4th Dec. 1816, pres. by Francis, Lord Napier, 30th Dec. 1822, and ord. 28th Aug. succeeding; died, suddenly, while preparing to set out for attending a meeting of Presb. at Selkirk, 16th March 1858, in 35th min. He marr. 3d June 1828, Barbara, daugh. of Mr Walter Paterson, stone-engraver, at the Holm of Balmaclellan; she died at Callander 24th Oct. 1866, and had issue.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iii.).-[Presb. GALASHIELS, FORMERLY LINDEAN & BOLSIDE. Previous to the Reformation, the church of Lindean belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. The church was removed to Galashiels about 1622.
1569. WILLIAM KER, son of George K. of Lintoun, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 18th Aug.; in 1574 his stipend amounted to xl li, £3, 6s. 8d. sterl. He continued in 1597, but was deprived before 11th Nov. 1599, and was ordained by the Presb. 8th Sept. 1607, to be summoned next day, that he may transfer the contract betwixt him and Mr William Hog into the hands of Mr Patrick Urquhart.-[Reg. 1635. JAMES URQUHART, A.M., trans. from Merton, adm. (at Glasgow 13th May; he was confined in the tolbooth of Selkirk eight weeks by the Committee of War for the sheriffdom of Selkirk, for a bond of ijm vc merks to John Scott of Galashiels, on which he craved enlargement from Parliament 4th Feb. 1646, who found, 29th April 1648, the bond not due, and declared him free. He died in 1650, aged about 47. He had "ane tenement of land in Canongate," for the infeftment of which he compounded with the City of Edinburgh 9th March 1642, and "from which his tenants would neither remove nor pay rent, and he being ane poore minister, not able to wait on, and Ovaire out chairges before the Lords of Session, and being necessitated to mortgage the said tenement for ane small soume for supplying of his wyff (Elizabeth, sister of John Pringill of Cottilferrie) and five children's necessity," the Parliament, I6th March 1649, "remitted to the Sheriff the action of removing advocated against by |
