Jan. 1706, adm. 1st May 1707, being the day the union was effected between the two kingdoms of England and Scotland. He died 20th May 1732, in his 57th year and 33d min. From being accidentally led to the perusal of the "Marrow of Modern Divinity;" (a work which was condemned by the Gen. Assembly 20th May 1720, as of dangerous and antinomian tendency,) he became specially instrumental in extending a theoretical knowledge of the principles of Divine grace, which, in many instances, must have been accompanied with a Christian life. Against this Act he and eleven others gave in a representation and petition to the following Assembly, which led to their being ironically termed " The Twelve Apostles." It brought forth, however, another Act, 28th May 1722, confirming and explaining the former. Though of a hypochondriac and feeble constitution, it may be allowed that he was indefatigable and diligent as a student, laborious and faithful as a pastor, zealous and watchful of his Saviour's honour, ever ardent and sincere in seeking to know and promulgate the truths of religion, and signally honoured by his attainments in learning, his knowledge of the Scriptures, and his popularity and usefulness as an author and preacher. He marr., 17th July 1700, Katharine, fifth daugh. of Robert Brown of Barhill, parish of Culross, " a woman of great worth." She survived him nearly five years, and had ten children, of whom two sons, the youngest, succeeding to the benefice, and two daughters only outlived him.-Publications-Six single Sermons, Edin. 1715-1756, 8vo.; Reasons for refusing the Oath of Abjuration, 1719; Human Nature in its Fourfold Estate, Edin. 1720, 8vo; Notes to the Marrow of Modern Divinity, 1726; sonne Sermons on Phil. ii. 7, 1727; View of the Covenant of Grace, Edin. 1734, 8vo; The Sovereignty and Wisdom of God displayed in the Afflictions of Men, Edin. 1737, 8vo; Tractatus Stigmologicus, Hebraeo-Biblicus, Amster. 1738, 4to; Sermons and Discourses, 2 vols., Edin. 1753, 8vo; An Explication of the first part of the Assembly's Shorter Catechism, Edin. 1755, 8vo; a Collection of Sermons, Edin. 1772, 12mo; View of the Covenant of Works, 1772, 8vo; The Distinguishing Characters of True Believers, Edin. 1773, 8vo; An Illustration of the Doctrines of the Christian Religion, 3 vols., Edin. 1773, 8vo; Ten Fast Sermons, 17 73, 8vo; Sermons, 3 vols, Edin. 1775, 8vo; Sermons on the Method of Recovery from the ruins of the Fall; Memoirs, Edin. 1776, 8vo; Works edited by the Rev.
