1662. JAMES KNOX, A.M., son of William K., book-binder, Edinburgh, great grand-nephew of the Reformer, attained his degree at the Univ. there 15th July 1650. 1681. HENRY KNOX, A.M., younger brother of the preceding, trans. from Dunscore; deprived by the Privy Council 10th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, not praying for their Majesties William and Mary, and for saying that he had rather the Papists should gain the day, than the Presbyterians. He died at Edinburgh 27th Dec. 1716, in his 76th year. A son became a min. of the Island of St. Christopher's-[MS. Geneal., MS: Account of Min. 1689, Test (St. And.), and Edin. Reg. 1691. GEORGE MULLIGAN, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1670, took orders as a deacon under Episcopacy, was received into communion by the Presbyterians, called in Nov. 1691, and ord. 7th Jan. succeeding; trans. to Moffat 24th April 1695.-[Reg. 1697. ARCHIBALD DEANS, A.M., son of Henry D., schoolmaster, reader, and session-clerk of Spott, whom he succeeded in these offices 27th Jan. 1689, took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th June 1690, licen. by the Presb. of Dunbar 30th Sept. 1696, became assistant to Mr Andrew Bowie, min. of North Leith, called in July, and ord. 23rd Sept. 1697; died 4th Feb. 1739, in his 71st year and 42nd min.-Publication-An account of the last words of Christian Ker, Edin. 1713, 12mo.-[Spott Sess., and Presb. 1742. JAMES HUME, licen. by the Presb. of Kelso 4th Nov. 1735, pres. by John Duke of Roxburgh in July 1739, ord. (by the Synod at Kelso) 20th April 1742. The settlement was delayed by opposition from the parishioners, on account of his having been presented instead of called by a moderation at large. It having been ordered by the Commission of 1740, but delayed by the Presb., the Assembly 18th May 1741 found the Presb. had neglected their duty, and ordered the settlement before 1st Sept., with certification they would be censured, and in case they failed, the Synod were appointed to take measures for having the same duly executed. Complaints of the irregularity of the Synod's proceedings were made to the following Assembly, when its sentence was affirmed by a vote of 57 to 56, 15th May 1742. Mr H. died 22nd Jan. 1792, in his 80th year, and 50th min. Notwithstanding the keen opposition, which ended in the discontented joining the Secession and building a meeting-house in the parish, Mr H. conducted himself with prudence and gentlemanly behaviour.
