1811. GAVIN JAMES HAMILTON, son of Gavin H. tenant in Blackwood, par. of Douglas, born 8th Sept. 1777, licen. by the Presb. of Lanark 2nd Oct. 1799, ord. 15th Nov. 1809, as min. of the Presbyterian congregation at Harbottle, Northumberland, pres. by the Commissioners for Gilbert, Lord Minto in Oct. 1810, and adm. 7th Aug. 1811; he was elected Presbytery Clerk, and died 5th Jan. 1837, in his 60th year and 28th min. He was preparing in 1809 for publication, under the patronage of the Board of Agriculture, Essays on some of the most interesting subjects relating to agriculture, rural and political economy, but the work never appeared. He marr. 20th Nov. 1809 Mary only daugh. of Mr James Walker, Antigua, and left issue.-[Douglas Sess., and Presb. Reg., &c.]
1837. JOHN EDMONSTON, son of Mr Thomas E., ironmonger, Edinburgh, educated at the High-School, where he became dux of the Rector's clans in 1815, lien. by the Presb. there 26th Jan. 1825, pres. by Gilbert, Earl of Minto in April, and ord. 21st July 1837. On joining in the Free Secession and signing the deed of Demission, he was declared no longer a min. of this church 27th June 1843. He died at Edin. 8th Dec. 1865, in 29th min. BOWDEN. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso.
1568. THOMAS DUNCANSON, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 10th Jan. 1567, entered at Candlemas 1568 with ic merks of stipend; pres. to the parsonage of Lillislief by His Majesty 22nd Nov. 1571. In 1574 Lillislief, Langnewtoun, and Melros were also under his care with jc lx Ii of stipend, and the kirk lands, he sustaining two readers. He was pres. to the stipend by his Majesty 2nd Jan. 1610, and died FATHER of the Church in 1621, in 53rd min., leaving a son Andrew, who was served heir 5th Dec. 1629.-[Reg. 1621. JOHN KNOX, A.M., probably son of Mr John K. min. of Melrose, was laureated at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1613 or 1614, pres. by James VI. 22nd Nov. 1621, and was then Synod Clerk. He gave xl ii towards building the Library in the college of Glasgow 1st August 1632, was a member of the Assembly in 1638, and of the Commissions 1646, 1648. He continued 26th July 1654, and had two sons, Mr Henry (who was a preacher, and attended Charles I. while in exile, and had given early promise of ability. A sum was put on his head |
