1691. ROBERT WYLLIE, A.M., trans. from Yarrow, called in 1690, and adm. 3d April following; he was a member of the Gen. Assembly 1692, and trans. to Hamilton 5th Feb. same year.-[Presb. Reg., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1692, Wodrow's Anal.]
1695. CHARLES GORDON, A.M., trans. from Dalmeny, called in Nov. 1694, and adm. 8th Aug. thereafter; elected Professor of Divinity in the Univ. and King's College, Aberdeen, in 1697, and trans. by the Assembly 20th Jan. 1698; he refused to accept it, however, and died 19th April 1710, aged about 54, in 24th min., "a learned and holy man of uncommon integrity." He marr. 12th June 1690, Rosina, a daugh. of Mr George Campbell, one of the min. of Dumfries; she survived him, and had two sons and a daugh., George, James, and Christian.-[Presb. 1711. ROBERT LYTHGOW, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edin. 29th April 1701, became chaplain to Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, a Lord of Session, licen. by the Presb. of Edin. 17th Sept. 1707, called 23rd Aug. 1710, and ord. 7th March succeeding; died 15th Nov. 1729, aged about 42, in 19th min. " He was a worthy brother, a faithful, serious, and moving preacher, having a great insight into the doctrine of the gospel, a judicious, pious man, endowed with an uncommon measure of ingenuity." He marr. Isabella Langlands, who died in Edinburgh Jan. 1740, and had a son Robert.-[Reg. Laver. Univ. Edin., Presb., and Test. Reg., Boston's Mem., Brown's Gosp. Truth.]
1730. WALTER STEWART, son of Bailie S., in Newton of Mearns, studied theology at Edinburgh and Leyden, pres. by Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, Bart., one of the Lords of Session, through the interest of Mr Will. Hamilton, Professor of Divinity, in May, and ord. 16th Oct.; died 15th April 1762, in 32nd min. He acquired the property of Barnhills. He marr. 24th Sept. 1750 Mary Duncanson, who died at Edinburgh 2nd March 1793, and had two daugh. Mary and Helen.-[Wodrow's Anal., Presb. Reg., Edin. Chr. Inst. xxv., Tombst., &c.]
1763. SIMON HALIBURTON, trans. from Castletown, pres. by Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, Bart., one of the Lords of Session in Oct. 1762, and adm. 31st March thereafter; he got a new church built in 1791, and died 26th April 1797, in 76th age and 47th min. 1798. THOMAS SAMUEL HARDIE, son of Mr James H. of the Customs Leith, licen. by the Presb. of Edinburgh 26th Nov. 1794, and ord. by them 27th July 1796 as Chaplain to the 7th Fencibles, pres. by Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, Bart., 27th Sept. 1797, and adm. 21st March succeeding; had D.D. from the Univ. of Edinburgh 9th April 1805, and died 22nd Sept. 1810, in 15th min. " In him learning and knowledge were blended with unassuming modesty, and moral excellence was tempered by a gentleness of spirit which shed over his character a peculiar grace. His heart was the seat of kindness and compassion, and Dot merely his studies, but even his relaxations were directed to promote the welfare of his fellowcreatures. His voice in public was somewhat feeble, but this was compensated by the fineness of its modulation and tones; while the perspicuity of his style, the pleasing expression of his countenance, the growing earnestness and warmth of his manner as he advanced in his address, the closeness of his reasoning, and the chastened luxuriance of his fancy, entitled him to rank |
