PRESBYTERY OF SELKIRK p. 542

 

1574. JOHN SCOTT, was exhorter at Selkirk and St: Mary Lowes at Nov. 1568; Selkirk, St. Marie kirk of the Lowes, New kirk of Etterick, and Rankillburne were also in the charge with lxxx li of stipend.-[Reg. Assig., Wodrow's Miscell.]

 

1579. THOMAS CRANSTOUN, trans. from Liberton, pres. by James VI. 6th Jan.; and also to Annan 7th May 1580 (which he does not appear to have accepted). Complaint was made in the Assembly Oct. 1580 that he had ministered the sacraments without preceding examination, and without his own parish, committing at other times the examination of the people to Readers, baptizing privately, celebrating the communion at Innerleithen on Easter-day to maintain superstition. These charges were remitted for trial to the brethren of Edinburgh. He continued 12th April 1582, and was re-trans. to Liberton soon after.-[Reg. 1585. ROBERT SCOTT, son of Walter S. of Hindscha, pres. by James VI. 15th April 1586; nothing farther appears of him.-[Reg. Assig., and Pres.]

 

1604. ALEXANDER JUSTICE, trans. from Dron, pres. by James VI. 5th May; he was admonished by the Presb. 4th Oct. 1608, "that he is too passionate, and that he be more diligent in discipline," and most sharply rebuked 11th July 1609, for four days absence (from the Presb.), having been one in Edinburgh, and three in St Johnstoun. He continued 7th May 1611, but under disease, “and is content to tak order anent providing his kirk at the sight of the min. of Melrose, Earlston, and Stow."-[Reg. Pres., and Assig., Presb. Reg.]

 

1611. ALEXANDER HOGG, A.M., laureated at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1601, he produced testimonials from the Presb. of Haddington, was Ares. by John, Archbishop of Glasgow after 18th June, and adm. 31st July 1611; he continued 5th Jan. 1619.-[Acc. Rect. Univ. St And., Presb. Reg.]

 

1619. ALEXANDER REID, adm. before 6th Dec.; he gave x1 merks towards building the Library in the Univ. off' Glasgow 25th May 1636, and died between 11th May 1645 and Nov. 1649.-[Carta Johneston, Kirk Pap., Jedburgh Presb., and Melrose Sess. 1649. ROBERT CUNINGHAME, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ, of Edinburgh in July 1642, adm. between 19th Aug., and 2d Nov. 1649; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662.-[Reg. 1675. ARCHIBALD INGLIS, A.M., trans. from Lochmaben, adm. before 30th Nov.; trans. to Glasgow (Parsonage) after 16th Oct. 1685.-[Reg. Sec. Sigill., Test. Reg. (Peebles).]

 

1679. ROBERT CUNINGHAME, A.M., noticed before, indulged by the Privy Council, l8thDec. [Wodrow's Hist.]

 

1685. RICHARD SCOTT, A.M., trans. from Kirkbean, adm. after 16th Oct. 1685; deprived by the Privy Council 10th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary. 1689. ROBERT CUNINGHAME, A.M., already mentioned, returned in 1689, and continued 5th Feb. 1690.-[Presb. Reg.]
