1617, was a member of Assembly in the following year, demitted before 4th April 1634, gave xl merks towards building the Library in the Univ. of Glasgow in 1636, and died previous to 25th July 1646. He marr. Anne, daugh. of Sir John Murray of Philiphaugh, and had Mr John, who succeeded to the cure, Mr Adam, James, merch. and burgess of Edinburgh, and Marion.--[Douglas's Bar., Reg. Laur. Univ. 1634. JOHN SCHAW, A.M., eldest son of the preceding, took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 23d July 1631, pres. by Charles I. 4th April 1634. He was confined to the parish in 1662, and accused with others before the Privy Council 14th July 1663, "of turbulent and seditious carriage." The benefice was vacant 12th Nov. 1664-2d Feb. 1666. He marr. Anna Murray, who with him had sasine of the lands of the eastmains of Selkirk, called Helein-shaw, 13th Sept. 1661, and had Patrick, Gedion, bookseller in Edinburgh, John, James, and Jean, who marr. 1678. ALEXANDER COOPER, A.M., trans. from Sorbie; he continued 3d Sept. 1682, and had three sons and a daugh., Robert, Robert, Alexander, who was served heir 25th July 1688, and Jean, who marr. Mr Andrew Mitchell, min. of Manor.-[Sess., and Kelso Sess. Reg.,-Inq. Ret. Gen. 6927.]
1685. JAMES CANARIES, son of Mr Thomas Kinneres, min. of Kinnaird. He had been a distinguished student at the Univ. of St. Andrews previous to 1659, and entered on trials for licence before the Presb. of Perth 14th Jan. 1671, but went to Rome, where he embraced the Popish faith. Returning, he was employed as a teacher or pedagogue in the Presb. of St Andrews in 1681, and petitioned to be again received into communion with the Church, which being agreed to, was solemnly done in that Presb. 15th Jan. 1682, after his discoursing at great length of the temptations he was under to make defection, and of the motives, convictions, and inducements that made him, after some time, "nauseat" that religion. He passed trials before that Presb., who recommended him 24th Oct. 1683 for licence; adm. before 29th May 1685. Had D.D. conferred, and was accused before the Privy Council 17th Sept. 1689 of not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary, but for the late King, that God would restore him to his wonted privileges; also of keeping correspondence with Papists, and not observing the Fast. The charges being found not proven he was acquitted; but the par. was declared vacant 23d Oct. 1691. He petitioned the Gen. Assembly, with a hundred and eighty others, in Jan. 1692 to be received into communion, but without effect. He demitted same year, went to England, and was inst. to the Rectory of Abington. He marr.
