1688. HEW SCOTT, A.M., formerly of Galashiels; was a member of the Assembly 1690, and though not legally settled, had the stipend for crops 1690 and 1691. He died in Oct. of the latter year, aged 60, in 34th min. " He was a good and holie man, faithfull and painfull in his calling, singularly pious, and much in the search and knowledge of the Scriptures. As be lived holilie, so he died happilie in the Lord." He marr. Jean Pringle, who died at Edinburgh 19th July 1709, aged 65, and had David, Helen (marr. Thomas Waldie, merchant, Edinburgh; she had a guinea allowed her by the Presb. 3d Aug. 1725), and David.-[Presb., Sess., and Test. Reg., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1690, New St. Acc. i.]

 

1693. JAMES DOUGLAS, called 25th Oct. 1692, and ord. 9th Aug. succeeding; died 22d March 1732, in 39th min. Jean Allan, his relict, died in Edinburgh 19th April 1741.[Presb., Sess., Test., and Edin. Reg. (Bur.), New St. Acc. i.]

 

1733. DAVID DUNCAN, licen. by the Presb. of Biggar 18th Feb. 1731, governor in the family of Sir William Baillie of Bonnington, pres. by George Il. 22d June 1732, and ord. 2d Aug. 1733; trans. to Gladsmuir 21st Sept, but died before being settled there, 22d Oct. 1758, in his 56th year and 26th min. He marr. in Nov. 1734, Elizabeth, daugh. of John Fullarton of Auchinhay; 2dly, Margaret Pringle, who died before 11th Jan. 1749; 3dly, 29th Jan. 1752, Janet Buchanan, who died 29th April 1763.-[Presb., Sess., and, Test. 1759. ROBERT DAWSON, had gift of a bursary from the Exchequer at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th Nov. 1747, and was licen. by the Presb. there 29th Nov. 1752; became assistant to Mr Archibald Lundie, min. of Salton, pres. by George II. in March, and ord. 25th Sept. 1759; died 23d March 1809, in his 82d year and 50th min. He marr. 17th Nov. 1767, Mary Abercromby, who died 1st Feb. 1814, and had Alexander, surgeon, chief magistrate of Lauder, &c.-Publication-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. vii.)- [Presb. 1807. JOHN CORMACK, A.M., son of - C., blacksmith in Edinburgh, to which profession he also entered; he distinguished himself at the Univ. of Edinburgh by carrying the prize for the best essay, took his degree 28th Jan. 1803, and was licen. by the Presb. there 29th Feb. 1804, pres. by George III. 15th May, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 17th Sept. 1807. Had D.D. from the Univ. of 8t. Andrews 12th April 1828, and died 20th Dec. 1840, in his 65th year and 34th min. He was an ardent student, a conscientious and faithful minister, and ever zealous for the glory of his Divine Master, and the best interests of his parishioners. Naturally of warm and benevolent feelings, he was kind, steady, and judicious as a friend. His conversation was enlivened with a vein of innocent pleasantry and racy humour peculiar to himself The crowning excellence of his character, however, was piety. He planned and formed an association in his parish for the improvement and encouragement of servants.
