The church was dedicated to St. Mary, and previous to the Reformation was a mensal-church of the Archbishop of St. Andrews. It was supplied by WILLIAM HESSILHOIP, or HESLOP, reader, from 1574 to 1578.
1585. JAMES MITCHELL, he was nearest of kin to two sons and three daugh. of his brother George M., barley-flour-miller, burgess of Edinburgh 9th Nov. 1613, and died between 7th Jan. and 19th July 1626, leaving a widow and children. His utencils, &c., were estimat at jc merks, Frie geir, d.d., iiiim iijc lxxii li xiijs iiijd-[Req. Assig., Presb., and Test. Reg., Calderwood's Hist., Inq. Ret. de Tut. 1306-1310.]
1628. WILLIAM MAXWELL, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1626; he was a member of the court of High Commission 21st Oct. 1634, and was trans. to Dunbar in 1635.[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Sess. Reg., Baillie's Lett., Maitland Miscell. ii.]
1635. THOMAS CAMPBELL, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1622, and was employed by the Town Council of Edinburgh to teach in the vacant pulpits in the city previous to 28th Nov. 1634; entered in Aug. 1635. “The min. having convenit the session 30th Dec. 1638 made knawin to thame the ordinance of the Presb. ordaining the parochin to pay xx li for the maintainence of the Commissioners expens and charges going to Glasgow. Answerit they could not pay becaus name of thame was present, neither had they the course nor manner of down-setting therof; also they culd not be taxed be thame, becaus they ar within the shirefdome of Edinburgh." Mr C. was deposed in April 1639, for not acknowledging the Gen. Assembly 1638, and deserting his charge. He bad a son Thomas.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Edin. Counc., and Sess. Reg., Wodrow's MSS.]
1640. JOHN CLELAND, A.M., son of Mr George C., min. of Durrisdeer, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22nd June 1633; having resided in the bounds for eleven months, he got a testimonial from the Presb. of Dalkeith 26th July 1638, was ord. 10th Dec. 1640, joined the Protesters in 1651, and died in Aug. 1665, aged about 52, in 25th min. Debts awin in jc xxxij li. He had four sons and five daugh., James, John, Robert, Archibald, Janet, Margaret, Jean, Christian, and Elizabeth.-[Edin. Grad., Dalkeith, and Jedburgh Presb., and Test. 1666. ROBERT KAY, formerly of Dunfermline, pres. by in March; died 15th May 1680, He marr. Barbara Lindsay, and had two sons, Robert, and Charles afterwards min. of South Leith end Charge.-[Sess., and Dunfermline Sess. Reg., New St. Acc. i.]
1680. ANDREW NAUGHLEY, trans. from Kirkmabreck, pres. by in July, and adm. 11th Aug. 1680; deprived by the Privy Council 29th Aug. 1689 for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary, but for the late King James. He was inst. to the Curacy of Threlkeld, in the diocese of Carlisle 4th April 1698, and died 17th April 1705. He marr. Mary Burnet, and had three sons, Alexander, who succeeded him in the curacy, and held it fifty-one years, William, James, and a daugh. Margaret. |
