a schoolmaster in Hawick, and was licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 5th June 1717, pres. by Thomas Haliburton of Newmains same year, ord. 18th Sept. 1718; died 1st July 1767, in 49th min. JAMES DUNCAN, licen. by the Presb. of Auchterarder 22nd April 1790, pres. by Walter Scott, Esq. of Harden 3rd July, and ord. 28th Sept. same year; died 27th Jan. 1845, in his 82nd year, and 55th min. SMAILHOLM. The church previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Dryburgh. It was supplied by THOMAS M`KENNA, reader, from 1574 to 1576, JOHN MAKKENNOCH from 1578 to 1580, and JOHN KENNEDY, or M'CLENNOQUHAN in 1586.

1596. JAMES HUNTER, trans. from Skirling, pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 1st May 1598; died before 30th Sept. 1629. 1629. JAMES LOGANE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1616, pres. by Charles I. 30th Sept. 1629, he got a church built in 1632, was a member of the court of High Commission 21st Oct. 1634, but was deposed before 21st Sept. 1641. He had £100 sterl. allowed by Parliament 5th July 1661, as some compensation for his sufferings.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. 1640. THOMAS DONALDSON, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 23rd July 1631, became pedagogue to the Master of Cranstoun, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 20th Dec. 1638, adm. 26th May 1640, pres. by Charles I. 21st Sept. 1641; he was appointed by the Assembly 4th June 1644 to attend the Master of Cranstoun's Regiment, was a member of the Assemblies 1645-1649, was confined to his parish on the re-establishment of Episcopacy in 1662, and recommended by James, Lord Cranstoun, for Crailing 17th March 1658; he died before 9th |
