PRESBYTERY OF LAUDER p. 528

 

licen. by Alexander, Bishop of Edinburgh, 9th Sept. 1673, pres. by Andrew Ker of Moriston with consent of his curators 11th Sept. 1676, coll. 11th, and inst. (colleague and suc.) 25th Jan. succeeding; deprived by the Priv. Council 29th Aug. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary, but for the late King James.-[Edin. Grad., Reg. Collat., Presb. 1689. WILLIAM CALDERWOOD, A.M., noticed above, returned 8th Sept; and was restored by the Act of Parliament 2bth April 1690. He was a member of the Assembly 1692, and died 19th June 1709, in his 81st year, and 55th min., having earned a high reputation for sanctity of life, and ministerial usefulness.-(Presb. 1711. JAMES CAMPBELL, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 30th April 1700, ordained by the Presbyterian min. in Cumberland 10th Aug. 1709, as min. to a congregation at Branton, called 31st July, and adm. 8th Nov. 1711; deposed 30th March 1714, for slanderous prevarication, drunkenness, indecency, &c. The sentence was probably reversed, but he demitted, which was accepted 21st Oct. same year. He was again deposed, 1st Aug. 17 18, for drunkenness, &c.-[Edin. Grad., Presb. 1717. THOMAS OLD, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th April 1705, became chaplain to Douglas of Cavers, and was licen. by the Presb. of Selkirk 15th Sept. 1715, pres. by the laird of Moriston in Oct., and by the Presb. jure devoluto 25th Dec. 1716, ord. 17th Jan. following; died 1st Sept. 1737, in 54th age and 21st min. His books were valued at £35 5s. ster. He marr. in June 1720 Margaret daugh. of John Fullarton of Auchenhay; she survived her husband, and had an only child, Jane, who marr. Alexander Fall, ship carpenter on board the “Somerset."-[Edin. Grad., Presb., and Test. Reg. (Lauder), Tombst.]

 

1738. WALTER DouGLASS, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th Jan. 1722, licen. by the Presb. of Chirnside 25th Feb. 1735, pres. by Ker of Moriston in Feb., and ord. 27th July 1738; died 3d April 17 52, in 14th min.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb Reg.]

 

1753. WILLIAM GULLAN, son of Mr Gabriel G., min. of Dryfesdale, had gift of a bursary at the Univ. of Edinburgh from the Exchequer 26th Feb. 1743, licen. by the Presb. of Lochmaben, pres. by James Ker, Esq. of Moriston in Oct. 1752, and ord. 17th May following; died unmarried 11th April 1792, in 39th min.-[Presb. 1793, ROBERT SCOTT, bred a tailor, educated at the par. school of Temple, and studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. of Chirnside 31st Jan. 1786, pres. by James Ker, Esq. of Moriston 16th Sept. 1792, and ord. 9th May thereafter; trans. to Coldstream 12th June 1795.-[Presb. 1795. JAMES BAIRD, licen. by the Presb. of Ayr 28th July 1784, pres. by George Ker of Moriston, Esq. 24th July, and ord. 17th Sept. 1795; trans. to Eccles 7th June 1797.[Presb. Reg.]
