David M., min. of the Associate Antiburgher congregation at Morebattle, (whose wife benefited the parish about 1780 by introducing from Fife the double-handed-wheel), licen. by the Presb. of Edinburgh 29th Jan. 1806, pres. by George III. 1st April, and ord. 24th Sept. 1807; demitted, (in consequence of having arranged an exchange with Mr Gordon of Morebattle,) which was accepted, 14th Jan. 1814.-[Sinclairs St. Acc. xvi., Presb. LEGERWOOD. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Paisley. It was supplied by ROBERT PATERSON, reader, from 1574 to 1591.

1593. GEORGE BYRIS, A.M., trans. from Barra; died in May 1640, aged about 7 3, in 51st min. His Frie geir amounted to vc xxix li. vj s. viij d. A son, Thomas, succeeded to the benefice.-[Reg. Assig., Kirk Pap., Stat. Reports 1627, Presb., and Test. Reg. (Edin., and Lauder), New St. Acc. ii.]
1634. THOMAS BYRIS, A.M., son of the preceding, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th July 1626, pres. by , and coll. in 1634, (probably as assistant or colleague); continued 23d March 1653, when a process against him was to be given from hand to band, and thought of before the meeting of Synod.-[Reg. 1655. WILLIAM CALDERWOOD, A.M., a relation of C. the historian, acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 26th July 1649; he was in the service of Sir Adam Hepburn, a Lord of Session from 1648, and licen. by the Presb. of Haddington 10th Nov. 1652, adm. 12th June 1655; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662, though he frequently, but privately, visited the parish.-[Edin. 1666. THOMAS BYRES, A.M., noticed above; died in Feb. 1682 aged about 76. His books, utencils, &c., were estimat at jc li., expense of his funeral li, Debita excedunt bonis. He left. a son Mr George.-[Reg. Collat., Test. Reg. (Lauder).
1666. GIDEON BRGUN, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 19th July 1661; licen. by George, Bishop of Edinburgh 2d Sept. 1664, ord. and coll. (colleague and suc.) 8th March 1666; trans. to Smalholm in 1676.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., and Collat.]
