1685. THOMAS MABANE, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1675, pres. by James VII. 11th July, and ord. 25th Sept. 1685; deprived by the Privy Council 29th Aug. 1689, for Dot reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and Dot praying for their majesties William and Mary, but for the late King James. He became schoolmaster of Lauder, and died 12th Feb. 1711, in 58th age, and 26th min. He marr. 1st Nov. 168.), Isobel Hume, who died 1st April 1708, aged 54, and had John, Thomas, Margaret, Grissel, and Alice, who marr. Mr Andrew Baxter, author of “An Enquiry into the Nature of the Human Soul."- [Sess., and Presb. Reg., Edin. Grad., Reg. Sec. Sigill., Tombst., MS. 1687. JOHN HARDIE, M.D., noticed above, attended the first meeting of Presbyterian min. 6th July; was restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690, was a member of the Assembly 1692, and died 29th Nov. 1707, aged about 75, in 49th min. Though a staunch presbyterian, he corresponded with Episcopalian ministers, and pressed moderation towards them. Having been a pious and laborious pastor his loss was lamented both by his brethren and people. His sister Janet marr. Mr Alex. Hutcheson, one of the min. of Holyroodhouse. -[Presb., Sess., Lothian Syn.,, and Test. Reg., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1692, and Old Dec. ii., Hist. of' Gen. Ass. 1690.]

 

1708. DAVID BROWN, A.M., trans. from Greenlaw, called 23d Sept. and adm. 25th Nov. Fever and measles raged so violently in the par. in March 1708 that one Lords day sixty desired the prayers of the congregation, and on another no less than eighty. Mr B. was trans. to Selkirk in April 1726.-[Presb. Reg., Wodrow's Anal., Acts of Ass. 1726.]

 

1727. JOHN BELL, son of Mr Robert B., min. of Crailing, and great-great-great-grandson of Mr John B. of Glasgow, who opened the Gen. Assembly there in 1638, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 19th Sept. 1722, pres. by George II. in Oct. 1726, and ord. 13th April succeeding; died 10th Dec. 1767, in 41st min. He marr. Elizabeth Ewan, who died in March 1788, and had a son Robert, licen. by the Presb. 6th Sept. 1757, who afterwards took orders in the Church of England, and became a chaplain in the R. N. thereby acquiring a property in terms of the will of his paternal grandfather.-[Presb. Reg., New St. Acc. ii., &e.]

 

1770. ALEXANDER DUNCAN, A.M., son of Mr Alex. D., min, of Smalholm, born 15th April 1745, studied at the United College, and had his degree from the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1766, licen. by the Presb. 14thJuly 1767, pres. by George III, 31st Dec. following, (Alex. Earl of Home having pres. Mr, Thomas Spankie, afterwards of Falkland, 9th April 17 68, and raised a process of Declarator, the settlement was delayed till the Court of Session 11th July 1769, assoilzied the Crown), ord. 5th July 1770. Returning from the communion at Channelkirk he was thrown from his horse, and was found dead on the road about six miles from his manse, 21st July 1800, in his 56th year, and 31st min.-Publication--Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. v.)- [St. Andrew's Univ., and Presb.
