The Church was dedicated to St Michael, the Archangel, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. It was supplied by ARCHIBALD FAIRBARNE, reader, from 1574 to 1585.

1625. FRANCIS COLLACE, A.M., trans. from Channelkirk, pres. by Charles I. 4th July; died in 1647, aged about 57. He marr. Marion Muirheid, and had a daugh. Agnes.-[Reg. See. Sigill, and Pres., Kelso Presb., and Edin. Reg. (Bapt.), Sederunt-book of Teinds.]
1647. NORMAN LESLIE, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. and King's College, Aberdeen, in 1631, was on the Exercise at the Presb. of St. Andrews 18th Jan. 1643, and having testimonials from them and the Univ., desired to enter the Exercise at Haddington 11th Sept. 1644. They tried, 13th Nov., to get him “to delay till Salton is planted, and 20th of said month they think fitt to desire him to desist till they shall think time." The parishioners of Salton, 12th March following, desire to hear him (and another preacher from the Presb. of St. Andrews) which the Presb. delayed. He obtained a testimonial from them to the Presb. of Kirkcaldy 30th Sept. 1646, and was on the Exercise there 14th of the succeeding month. He was pres. to Cumnock by William, Earl of Dumfries in Jan. 1647, but the Presb. of Ayr 3d March, “find it not expedient to engage the young man by writing for him." He was pres., however, to this parish by Charles I. 17th Aug. 1647; died 22d July 1657. aged about 46, in 10th min. 1659. JOHN HARDIE, A.M., son of Robert H., burges and guild-brother of Edinburgh, and laureated at the Univ. there in May 1653. adm. 19th May 1659; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was summoned before them 30th July 1663 for preaching after being discharged, and ordained to remove with his family, twenty miles distant from the parish, within fourteen days, and discharged to reside within six miles of a cathedral church, or three of a royal burgh. He studied medicine and took a doctor's degree. Preaching against Popery after the Toleration in 1687 he was tried for treason 13th Feb. 1688, but the Lords found “the speeches libelled did not infer the pains in the indictment."-[Reg. Laur. Univ. 1663. JAMES STRATON, A.M., trans. from Eyemouth, coll. 13th Oct. and pres. by Charles II. 10th Dec. One of his parishioners in 1671 had the audacity to tell him that he "was more meet to be a sheep-keeper than a minister." He demitted after 25th April 1682.-[Sess., Syn. (Dalkeith Presb.), and Test.
