ERSILTON OR EARLSTON. Previous to the Reformation the Church belonged to the Abbey of Coldingham. It was supplied by JAMES FLABERNE, reader, from 1st Feb. 1573 to 1586.
1586. JAMES DAES, formerly of St Cuthberts, placit (at command of the Lords of the Checkyr's deleyuerance) 29th March ; was proposed for Kennoway 9th Aug. following, officiated for a time at Anstruther in 1588, was a member of the Assemblies 1595 and 1602, was pres. by James VI. 20th Aug. 1611, called before the Court of High Commission 2d March 1620, demitted before 4th Jan. 1633, and died before 20th June 1643, when his son, Mr John, was served heir-[Reg. Assig., Sec. Sigill, and Pres., Presb., Edinburgh Presb., Anstruther Sess., and Test Reg., Booke of the Kirk, Calderwood's Hist., Inq. Ret. Gen. 2858.]
1633. JAMES DAEs, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th July 1626, pres. by Charles I. 4th Jan. 1633; continued 3d Nov. 1646, deposed about 1659.-[Edin. Grad., Reg. Pres., and Old Dec., Peterkin's Records, Acts Parl. vii.]
1659. HENRY COKBURN, A.M., formerly of Channelkirk, was employed by the Presb., and continued for fifteen months-[Acts Parl. vii.]
1661. JAMES DAES, A.M., above mentioned, reponed before 22d March, when an Act of Parliament was passed in his favour. He died before 6th June 1673, and had a son, Alexander.-[Acts Parl. vii., Stow Sess. Reg., Reg. Sec. Sigill., and Collat.]
1673. JOHN HEPBURNE, A.M., trans. from Hilton, pres. by Charles II. 6th June; deprived by the Privy Council 25th Aug. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, not praying for their majesties William and Mary, and other scandalous misdemeanors. 1687. JOHN ANVERSON, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1672, was a preacher at the first meeting of min. in Lothian and Tweeddale 6th July 1687 after the toleration, called , and ord. 4th Oct. 1687. He was a member of the Assembly in 1690, was called and declared min. by the Presb. 19th May 1691, and trans. to St Cuthberts same year.-[Edin. Grad., Lothian Syn., and Presb. Reg., Reg. 1694. GEORGE JOHNSTON, A.M., son of Patrick J., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 15th June 1691, called 16th Nov. 1693, and ord. 12th March succeeding; died of fever at Edinburgh 9th Dec. 1702, in 31st age, and 9th min. His plenishing was estimai at iiijc li., Inventar and debts ijm vjc lxxxviij 1i. Shares in the Darien Company, £120, 16sh. sterl.
