a calm and placid temper. He was an ardent student, particularly of the Scriptures, with which he had an intimate acquaintance, and which he regarded with profound veneration. To this he added great powers of conversation, and was a delightful companion. His most striking characteristics, however, were the generous tolerance of his temper, and the liberality of his sentiments. He marr. 10th Oct. 1805 Elizabeth, daugh. of Capt. James Skene of Aberdeen, she died 7th Aug. 1851, and had Andrew Skene, preacher of the gospel, Robert D. MERSINGTON. Was recommended by the Presbytery to the Commissioners of Parliament before 15th March 1649 to be separated from Eccles, and a new kirk to be erected at Easter Mersington.
FOGO. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. It was supplied by donald balfoue, reader from 1574 to 1590.
1590. william methwen, removed from Langton, (Langton being then attached), he went back again 1591, but returned after 1595, was a member of the Assemblies, 1602, 1608, pres. by James VI. 1st June 1614, called before the Court of High Commission in 1620, demitted, before 4th Aug. 1626, and died in 1634, aged 75, in 50th min., leaving a son, who succeeded to the cure.—Reg. 1626. james methwen, son of the preceding, pres. by Charles I. 4th Aug.; died in 1660, aged 74 j was believed in 1830 to have descendants living at Manchester, Burntisland, and Berwick-upon-Tweed.—[Reg. 1650. john pringle A.M., only son of George P. of Balmungo, attained his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1645. Conforming to Episcopacy, he was pres. by Charles II., coll. 26th Dec. 1664, and died 22d Feb. 1682, in 54th age and 32d min. Frie geir, dd, vm iijc xiiij li xij s (Five Thousand Three Hundred Pounds Fourteen Shillings and Twelve Pence). He marr. 5th Feb. 1662 Jean, daugh. of Mr John Shaw, min. of Selkirk, and had five sons and two daugh., James, Alexander, James, John, ancestor of the family of Whytbank, George, Elspeth, and Ann.—[Inq.
