PRESBYTERY OF JEDBURGH p. 516
1764. WILLIAM SCOTT, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 2nd Dec. 1760, ord. by the Presbyterian Class Newcastle 6th Oct. 1762 as min. to the congregation at Ravingstondale, called 2nd Nov. and adm. 26th Dec. 1764; he intimated the Decreet of Suppression 8th May 1777, preached his last sermon here, and removed to Southdean in terms of said Decreet in 1785. - [Presb. WILTON. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Archbishop of Glasgow. It was proposed to remove the kirk to Borthwick water 19th June 1650.
[JOHN LANGLANDS, Reader from 1574 to 1585, was deposed from the parsonage and vicarage before 1590 (most probably he was of the Romish Church, and is the person alluded to in the New Statistical Account, as having had a gift of the Mains of Wilton, a farm of about eighty acres). 1602. WILLIAM CLERK, A.M., trans. from Cavers, pres. by James VI. 30th Dec.; he was pres. to Cassilton, by Walter, Lord Scott of Buccleuch in April 1607, but he refused it because a promise made by Sir Gideon Murray had not been performed. He was pres. and desired to give the half of Borthwick to Mr Francis Makgill 10th June 1612, gave xx li towards building the Library in the Univ. of Glasgow 1st Aug. 1632; died and left a widow previous to 30th April 1641.-[Reg. 1641. JOHN LANGLANDIS, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 26th July 1634, elected one of the masters of the High School there 13th April 1638, pres. by Francis, Earl of Buccleuch in Feb., and adm. 30th April 1641; he desired 6th July 1642 to be freed of Borthwick, or else that he may have a stipend out of it. Refusing to conform to Episcopacy he was confined to the parish in 1662; had saline of ane annual rent furth of the lands of Hayning 10th Jan. 1664; continued 28th April 1669 (and was not improbably deprived on account of the Test). 1683. JOHN STEWART, A. M., studied at St. Leonard's College, and took his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews 26th July 1670, pres. by Arthur, Archbishop of Glasgow, jure devoluto in Jan., coll. -, and inst. 28th Feb. 1683, and also to Borthwick 28th Feb. 1688, deprived by the Privy Council 17th Sept. 1689 for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary. Margaret Forbes, relict, recommended by the kirk session of Jedburgh, received from that of Arngask iiij s 24th Feb. 1706.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Presb., Arngask Sess., and Test. Reg.
