PRESBYTERY OF JEDBURGH p. 514

 

died 16th Dec. 17 84, in his 78th year and 29th min. He marr. 22nd Sept. 1779 Elizabeth Ainslie, who died 20th April 1800.-[Presb. Reg.]

 

1785. WILLIAM SCOTT, removed from Abbotrule, in terms of the Decreet of Suppression and Annexation, and was adm. 5th Jan.; died 14th May 1809, in 72nd age and 47th min. He marr. 2nd July 1766 Sybil Hewitson, who died at Edinburgh 7th Feb. 1822; their only daugh. marr. Mr Reid, and afterwards Charles Baxter, Esq., Edinburgh. 1810. JOHN RICHMOND, son of the Rev. Dr. R., Irvine, and licen. by that Presb, 1st Aug. 1809, pres. by Archibald, Lord Douglas two days after, ord. 19th April following; in consequence of infirmity he retired to St. Andrews in 1847, and subsequently to Edinburgh, where he died 21st Jan. 1854, in his 70th year, and 44th min. He marr. 28th April 1825 Catharine Mitchell and had issue, James, George Mitchell, lieutenant 12th Native Infantry, India. ABBOTRULE.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh. The parish was suppressed by the Commissioners of Teinds 28th Feb. 1776, and united to Southdean and Hopekirk.

 

1591. PATRICK BISCHOPE, A.M., trans. from Minto, having Hopkirk, Bedrule, and Mynto also in charge.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1593. JOHN BONAR, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1582, Hobkirk, Bedrule, Minto, Hawick, Welton, Hassindean, and Cavers were also under his care, holding perhaps at same time the benefice of North Ronaldshay; he removed to Hassindean next year. -[Act. 1605. JOSEPH TENNENT, A. M., trans. from Bedrule, pres. by James VI. 31st Oct.; re-trans. to Bedrule 17th May 1609; he returned; was deprived before 24th July 1621, and died prior to 11th May 1633, aged about 58.-[Reg. See. Sigill, and Pres., Presb Reg., Sinclair's xv., and New St. Acc. iii.]

 

1622. THOMAS SINCLAIRE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 25th July 1618, pres. by James VI. 21st July 1621, and adm. after 21st Jan. following; demitted before 15th July 1623, the brethren being informed he had gone to London with the Prior of Coldingham's children.-[Edin. 1624. JAMES KER, of Grange, A.M., son of Mr John K. of Littledean, took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 14th July 1621; was on the exercise in the Presb. 6th March 1623, pres. by James VI. 15th July following, ord. 25th Aug. 1624; deprived on the re-establishment of Episcopacy in 1662, and confined to the parish. Having preached in his house 14th March 1680 to a congregation of five hundred, some of them without doors, he was libelled before the Privy Council 6th May thereafter for keeping a field conventicle, and imprisoned; he was liberated 1st Sept. on caution to appear when called, and that he keep no conventicles
