FRANCIS SCOTT, A.M., trans. from Minto, pres. by Charles II. 1st Nov., coll. -, and inst. 25th Dec.; deprived by the Privy Council 29th Aug. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and praying for James VI. after his abdication. OXNAM. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh. It was supplied by JAMES ANTSLIE, reader from 1574 to 1580. The Vicarage of Plenderleath has been annexed to this parish.
1599. WILLIAM AINSLIE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 10th Aug. 1595; he had possession of the Vicarage, and was deposed in 1604.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Assig., and Pres., Presb. Reg.]
1610. PATRICK CARMICHAELL, trans. from Aberdour, adm. (at Jedburgh) 25th March; pres. by James VI. 24th Oct. 1612; died before 10th Sept. 1623, in 24th min. Elspet Borthwick, his widow, was recommended by the Presb. of Dalkeith 1st Jan. 1629, to have a collection made in her favour, and was alive 19th Jan. 1656.-[Reg. 1624. ANDREW KIRKTOUNE, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 30tb June 1617, pres. by James VI. 19th Sept. 1623, and adm. (at Jedburgh) 19th May succeeding; died between 30th April and 15th Dec. 1634, aged about 37.-[Edin. Grad., Reg. Sec. Sigill., and Pres., Presb. Reg., Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii.]
1634. DAVID FOULIS, trans. from Bedrule, Pres. by Charles I. 15th Dec.; deposed in April 1639, for contempt of the Gen. Assembly 1638, and not acknowledging their Acts. In 1662 lie petitioned Parliament, with his son John, showing he had been " forces to abandon Scotland merely for his affection to the Royal authority, and not taking the Covenant, leaving behind seven children to the charity of their friends: being necessitate thereafter to depart the three kingdoms, and because of some expressions in a sermon at Hamburgh in 1654, against Cromwell, he was forced to retire to a private corner in England, where he has lived in a most miserable condition, being incapacitated to do anything either for his own or his children's livelihood." On the report of a committee, the Parliament, 8th July, allowed him L.100 sterl. furth of the readiest of the vacant stipends.-[Reg. Pres., Presb. Reg., Peterkin's Records, Acts Part. vii.]
