HASSENDEAN. The church was dedicated to St. Kentigern, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Melrose. It was supplied by JOHN SCOTT, reader, in 1574, and THOMAS NEWBIE from 6th Dec. 1576 to 1580. The parish was changed to Roberton during the time of the Usurpation; but again restored by the Lords of Plantation 5th July 1666, and finally united to Minto and Zyilton, and the parish suppressed by the Commissioners of Parliament for Plantation of Kirks, &c. 22d July 1690.

1611. JAMES MITCHELSOUNE, A.M., brother of John M., of Middleton, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 2 7th July 1605, pres. by James VI. 8th Apr21 1611; trans. to Bathans (Yester) in 1613.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., and Pres., Presb., and Dalkeith Presb. Reg]
1613. ALEXANDER FORREST, A.M., trans. from Kailzie, pres. by James VI. in March, and adm. previous to 21st Oct. The Presb. of Melrose, 7th Oct. 1615, "heiring of Mr Alexander receiving the gudwife of Sintoun to the communion, notwithstanding he understood she was ane contemner both of her awin min. (Mr Alex. Hog, Ashkirk) and of the Word out of his mouth, and also of repairing toward her and with her from his kirk and to his kirk since syne, albeit he was advised be them not to receive lier in respect of her contempt, ordains to wryt to the Presb. of Jedburgh to tak order with him." He was one of fifty-five ministers who signed a Protestation to Parliament in favour of the Liberties of the Kirk 27th June 1617. He gave xl li. toward building the Library in the Univ. of Glasgow 25th May 1636, and was " invaded with a drawn sword," by Robert Hislop, one of his parishioners, in Sept. 1649, on which the Synod, 24th Oct., enjoin the Presb. "to tak order," continued 10th March 1658, and left a son William, who was served heir to him in the lands of Huntlaw, 9th May 1655. - [Reg. Pres., and Assig., Presb., and Melrose Presb. 1664. WILLIAM MUSHET, trans. from Slains, pres. by Charles II -, coll. -, and inst. 30th Dec. The Presb. having designed a glebe to him, it was suspended on account of not being properly instituted, but the Lords of Session found in his favour 28th Jan. 1668; died between 8th May and 4th June 1678.
