1682. WILLIAM WISCHEART, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1676, pres. by the Laird of Minto, coll. -, and inst. 2d June 1682; he was gifted to the escheit of Alexander Wishart, merchant, burges of Glasgow, by Charles II. 6th March 1685. He was also pres. by him to Sprouston 25th Feb. 1686, which was not made effectual; deprived by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690.-(Edin. Grad., Presb., and Test. Reg. (St. And.), Reg. Sec. 1690. JAMES AINSLIE, A.M., restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April; died 10th July 1702, in his 95th year and 50th min. A daugh. marr. John Scot of Weems.-[Presb. Reg., Tombst.]
1698. WALTER AINSLIE, A.M., nephew of the preceding, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d May 1685, licen. by the Presb. of Haddington 7th April 1695, called in Nov. 1697, ord. (assist. and suc.) 2d March thereafter; trans. to Lundie and Fowlis 20th Nov. 1700.-[Edin. Grad., Presb. Reg.]
1703. JOHN RITCHIE, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th June 1697, licen. by the Presb. 23d July 1701, called by the Presb. jure devoluto 10th Feb., and ord. l0th May 1703; died 11th Nov. 1744, in 75th age and 42d min. 1741. GEORGE KAY, A.M., trans. from Collessie, pres. by Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto 1st Aug., and adm. (colleague and suc.) 23d Oct.; trans. to Dysart 2d Charge 2d Nov. 1743.[Presb. Reg.]
1745. GEORGE BRUCE, A.M., a native of Rothiemay, Banffsh., educated at the par. school, became schoolmaster of Forglen, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 4th June 1734, and ord. by them 13th Aug. after, as min. to the Presbyterian congregation, Newcastle; nominated by the Presb. of Edinburgh 27th Oct. 1742, as min. to the congregation at St. James's Island, South Carolina, within two miles of Charleston, with a salary of £85 14s. sterl., which he respectfully declined 31st March following; pres. by Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto (as colleague and suc.) in Oct. 1744, and adm. 6th Feb. after; trans. to Dunbar in April 1766.-[Sinclair's St. Acc. xiv., Presb, and Edin. 1767. THOMAS SOMERVILLE, son of Mr Will. S., min. of Hawick, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, became tutor to the son of Commissioner Burgess of the Excise in that city, and was licen. by the Presb. there 28th Nov. 1764, pres. by Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, Bart., in Dec. 1766, and ord. 24th April following; trans. to Jedburgh 3d Sept. 1772.-[Life, Presb. 1774. WILLIAM BURN, min. of a Presbyterian congregation at Alnwick, pres. by Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, Bart., 6th Nov. 1773, and adm. 6th April thereafter; had D.D. from the Univ. of Glasgow in 1786, and died 9th Dec. 1826, in his 82d year and 56th min. DAVID AITKEN, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, was librarian at the Divinity-ha11 library, and was licen. by that Presb. 28th March 1821; after travelling on the Continent he was pres. by Gilbert, Earl of Minto in April, and ord. 14th Sept. 1827; had D.D. conferred by the Univ. of Edinburgh 8th July 1843, was offered the chair of Divinity and Ecclesiastical |
