the bounds having furnished a testimonial " that they knew na substantial thing that might lett ony trial with this or ony other Presb." The Presb., 1st Oct. 1611, " all with ane voce givis consent and approbation to his admission to the holie office quhich and quher it sall pleas God to appoint him to serve" (probably settled afterwards at Westerkirk).-[Reg. 1608. ADAM SCOTT, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 25th July 1607; trans. to Hawick in 1612.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., and Assig.]
1609. SAMUEL. COKBURNE, A. M., trans. from Kirkmichael, Banffsh.; ordained by the Presb. 17th Feb. 1613, " to mak restitution of Mr Hector Rae's (min. of Hownam) book, or else the price of it, vij 1i x s., under the pain of suspension, betuix and this day aught days." He was "verie seik" 6th March 1623, and died before 5th Aug 1624, and left a son, Andrew, and a daugh, Helen.-[Presb., and Peebles Presb. Reg., Reg. Assig.]
1613. WILLIAM WISHART, A.M., trans. from Fettercairn, adm. (helper) after 6th Oct.; retrans. thither again in 1618.-[Reg. Pres.]
1625. WILLIAM MAXWELL, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1620, pres. by, in Dec. 1624, and adm. 20th April following; pres. to St. Mary's Kirk of the Lowes by Charles I. 13th Feb. 1641, which was not carried out, and died 8th Jan. 1651, in his 50th year and 26th min., leaving a widow and children.-[Act. 1652. JAMES AINSLIE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 17th April 1639, called 11th Jan., and adm. and inst. (after being sustained by the Gen. Assembly) 9th Dec. 1652, objection having been taken because he was a Free mason, and the neighbouring Presb. consulted previous to entering him on trials. The Presb. of Kelso, 24th Feb. 1652, shewed " that to their judgment there is neither sinne nor scandale in that word, because in the purest tymes of this Kirke maisons haveing that word have been ministers, that maisons and men haveing that word have been and are daylie in our sessions, and many professors haveing that word are daylie admitted to the ordinances." He was deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb., and Kelso Presb. Reg., Wodrow's Hist.]
1664. FRANCIS SCOTT, A.M., got his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 14th July 1659, Ares. by the laird of Minto in Sept., coll. -, and inst. 21st Dec. 1664; trans. to Hassendean in 1678.-[Edin. Grad., Presb. Reg.]
1679. JAMES KIRKWOOD, A.M., born in the par. of Dunbar, and educated at the schools there, had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1670, passed trials before the Presb. Of Haddington, and was recommended 13th July 1676 for licence, became chaplain to the family of John Earl of Caithness, afterwards Breadalbane, pres. by the laird of Minto 25th Feb., coll. 5th, and inst. 12th May 1679; deprived for not taking the Test alter 1st Nov. 1681. In 1684, through the friendship of Dr Gilbert Burnet, he was inst. to the Rectory of Astwick, a small living in England. He bequeathed to the Presb. of Dunbar a number of valuable curiosities, books, and papers, detailing his efforts, in conjunction with the Hon. Robert Boyle, in circulating the Scriptures in the Irish language through the Scottish Highlands.-Publication-A Discourse of the right way of improving our Time, Lond. 1692, 8vo.-[Edin.
