1801. JOHN ELLIOT, licen. by the Presb. 26th July 1793, became assistant to the Rev. Thomas Elliot, Cavers, pres. by George III. 4th Nov. 1800, and ord. 21st Jan. succeeding; died 1st Sept. 1817, in 68th age and 17th min. He marr. Jean Armstrong, who died 26th Feb. 1828.-[Presb. 1818. ADAM LAIDLAW, licen. by the Presb. of Selkirk 13th Nov. 1778, ord. by the Presbyterian Class of Newcastle, 15th Nov. 1782, as min. to a congregation at South Shields, whence he was prom. to Silver-street, Newcastle, in Feb. 1784, pres. to Southdean by George III. 18th July 1809, but another being pres. by Arch., Lord Douglas, the Court of Session, 12th Dec. thereafter, preferring the latter, he was pres. to this par. by George, Prince Regent, 6th Jan., and adm. 28th Aug. 1818; died 1st April 1834, in his 81st year, and 52d min. He marr. 8th May 1786, Mary Laidlaw, who died 27th June 1849.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1834. WILLIAM STEWART MARTIN studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. 1st Oct. 1823, pres. by William IV. June, and ord. 2d Sept. 1834; died 6th May 1857, in 64th age, and 23d min.-Publication-Account of the Parish, (New St. Acc. iii.)- [Presb. Reg., &c.]

It was supplied by EDWARD DICKSOUN, reader, from 1576 to 1578, and ROBERT HAMILTON in 1579.

 

1574. WILLIAM M'GOWEN, had for his stipend the parsonage and vicarage, with the kirkland in the Assembly 1575; being also Commissioner of Wigton, he was accused of non - residence, and was therefore charged to reside; he remained unnoticed till found in the charge 1585.-[Wodrow Miscell., Reg. 1589. PATRICK BISCHOP, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of St Andrews in 1585; trans. to Abbotrule about 1590.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Reg. Assig.]

JAMES JOHNSTOUN, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th July 1598, pres. by the Presb. jure devoluto 8th April; suspended 19th Oct. following, for being absent from two Synods; deposed 21st Dec. 1608, on a confession of fornication.
