SYNOD OF MERSE AND TEVIOTDALE

 

The Synod Records from April 1639 to April 1661 in three volumes, and a volume from July 1690 to Oct. 1707, were destroyed in the burning of the manse of Morebattle in Jan. 1727. Since 6th April 1708 they are contained in seven volumes.

 

PRESBYTERY OF DUNSE.

Was proposed to be erected by the General Assembly 1581. The Register commences 8th Nov. 1659, and is contained in nine volumes, having chasms from 24th July 1660 to 7th May 1661, 31st July 1688 to 1st Nov. 1698 (from 7th Aug. 1690 to 19th Oct. 1698 the Presbytery was united to that of Chirnside), 21st Aug. 1733 to 14th April 1735, and 6th Oct. 1749 to 6th March 1770.

 

 

DUNSE.

Previous to the Reformation the church was a prebend of the Collegiate Church of Dunbar. birken-side was proposed by the Synod to be created 10th July 1611 as a Second Charge, but was not carried into effect.

 

1568. john zoung, trans, from North Berwick in Nov., with, a stipend of ijc merk, trans. to Jedburgh at Lammas 1569.—[Reg. Min.]

 

[Mr james bennet, min. of Heriot, was pres. by James VI. 2d May 1581, but demitted previous to 26th Jan. 1582.—Reg. Pres.]

 

1582. patrick gaittis, trans, from Edrom, pres. by James VI. 26th Jan. He was seized and carried to Edinburgh by the archers of the guard 25th May 1584; refused, with others, to subscribe obedience to his Ordinary, in Nov. of that year, for which payment of his stipend was discharged, but he complied afterwards; continued 10th July 1611, though in "inability and auld aige." He had a son, Mr Alexander, min. of Polwarth.—[Reg. Pres., and Assig., Dalkeith Presb., St Andrew's Syn. and Test. Reg., Calderwood's Hist.]

 

1585. peter danielstoun—continued in 1586 (this may refer, perhaps, to another name for the preceding).—[Reg. Assig., Edin. Presb. Reg.]

 

1607. james gaittis, trans, from Langton, (stated to be 2d min.), continued 23d Nov. 1608.—[Presb. Reg. &c.]

 

1613. john weemse, A.M., trans, from Hutton, when he was leeted for vacancies in Edin­burgh 23d Dec. He was a member of the Assembly at Perth in 1618, was called before the Court of High Commission in 1620, and had a conference with Archbishop Spottswood. He
